It feels weird to call this a great record–it's so slight. But it's perfect and full of pleasure; it does what it sets out to do almost without a bad second. And what does it set out to do? To convey the troubled innocence of the Beach Boys through a time of attractive but perilous psychedelic sturm und drang.

As a comeback, Midnight Rainbows stands as a fine testament of Joe South's talent. While not exactly the pop sound he was famous for, it fits in nicely alongside such acts as Atlanta Rhythm Section, who helped out here and there, and the Marshall Tucker Band. Containing a truly gospel take on "For Your Precious Love" and a letter-perfect rendition of Leon Russell's "Stranger in a Strange Land," this disc has improved with age. Tinged with hints of country, "Midnight Rainbows" stands well alongside all the other fine Joe South releases, a fine product indeed.

Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms, soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo wop, soul, straight blues, and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings.

The high points of Shut Down Volume 2 are arguably among the strongest moments in The Beach Boys' saga thus far: "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Don't Worry Baby" (Brian's response to Phil Spector's "Be My Baby"), "The Warmth of the Sun" (written just hours after JFK's assassination) and a cover of Frankie Lymon's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love".

Bill Evans made his debut on electric piano, usually playing it in conjunction with his acoustic piano. Joined by bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, Evans performs seven of his stronger originals including "Funkallero," "The Two Lonely People," "Re: Person I Knew," "T.T.T." and "Waltz for Debby." Although not as distinctive on the electric keyboard as he was on the acoustic counterpart, Evans sounds inspired by its possibilities and is heard in top creative form throughout the date.

Some time ago I published a magnificent album of Inti-Illimani "The flight of the condor" (http://avaxhome.ws/hraphile/Inti_Flight.html). In this soundtrack, Inti-Illimani shares the credit with another Chilean Andean music group "Guamary"…
