Highly regarded by soul music cultists and virtually unknown by anybody else, Howard Tate had some minor success with the Verve label in the late '60s. He's most famous to rock audiences as the original performer of "Get It While You Can," which became one of Janis Joplin's signature tunes.

Flute and sax player Harold McNair is best known to pop and rock fans for his work as a session man on numerous Donovan recordings. However, he did come from the world of jazz, and it's not a surprise to find that this 1970 album (released shortly before his death) is very much an instrumental jazz recording. At the same time, it's not wholly devoid of influence from pop, rock, folk, and blues, particularly as some of the players will be recognizable to many rock fans.

The eclectic worldbeat/folk-rock outfit Poi Dog Pondering were formed in Waikiki by vocalist/guitarist Frank Orrall, violinist/vocalist Susan Voelz, and multi-instrumentalist Dave "Max" Crawford, the only constants in the group's history; sometimes swelling to upwards of ten members, the band has seen numerous personnel shifts. Named in part for a Hawaiian expression meaning "mutt," Poi Dog Pondering relocated to Austin, TX, and picked up a following through extensive touring…

The recording is first rate. The strings sound luscious and, when called upon, translucent. The bass is ample (good bass drum impact), with double basses clear enough that their many rapid scales keep up with those in the winds and upper strings. This feat is heard rarely on many LPs. LSC 1901 is worth owning for the pure pleasure the brilliant string ensemble provides and for Monteux’s deeply moving interpretation.

Wayne Berry was in L.A. in the mid to late 60's, attempting to put together a singer/songwriter deal. A&M signed him for some demos, at least one of which was released, but evidently that deal didn't last. He hung out with a few songwriters and attempted some collaborations, the one of note being with the post-We The People (2) and pre-Cowboy (2) Tommy Talton. They shopped a few songs and had songs cut, but nothing ever came of that.
Berry ran into a bunch of people in L.A. and formed Timber, who released two albums, the first, Part of What You Hear, on Kapp (co-produced by Joni Mitchell's ace producer Henry Lewy) and Bring America Home on Elektra (produced by ex-Don & The Goodtimes and Touch guru Don Galucci. Neither album went anywhere, though Berry's touch as songwriter led to the solo contract with RCA..

    Genre: Fusion

In 1989, Steps Ahead consisted of Mike Mainieri on MIDI vibraharp, synclavier and acoustic piano, the young saxophonist Bendik doubling on keyboards, guitarist Steve Kahn, Tony Levin on electric bass and Chapman stick, and drummer Steve Smith. The powerful band did not have a great deal of subtlety by this era, but it helped to keep the much-maligned genre of fusion alive, mixing the sound of rock with jazz improvising.
