‘Atotal’ is a collection of material taken from French multi-media artist Franck Vigroux’s latest audiovisual project, also titled ‘Atotal’. Yet again, it demonstrates the unique, monolithic sound that has made Vigroux one of the most distinctive artists currently operating in electronic music.

Though it was released under the name Ataraxia, The Unexplained is one of innovative electronic composer Mort Garson's best-known albums, along with Lucifer's Black Mass and Mother Earth's Plantasia. And while ataraxia is a term for inner calm, this wild exploration of supernatural phenomena couldn't be further from that state of mind. During the late '60s and early '70s, the occult was a major pop culture trend, and one that Garson dove into deeply with Black Mass and his astrology-themed series…

Twin Atlantic‘s sixth album, like much music emerging this year, was created in something of a flux. Their first album without drummer Craig Kneale, it was recorded in isolation conditions, with lead singer Sam McTrusty writing and recording while also looking after his small child as his wife worked on covid wards…

Serving as the Habsburg representative in Naples from 1728, Count von Harrach was, like any cultured man of his time, also keen on music. Back in his stronghold of Rohrau (Lower Austria) after his long stay of six years in Italy, he brought back all kinds of objects, paintings and scores that inspired this album, which has been designed by Maurice Steger, virtuoso of the "flautino", an instrument which was very fashionable in those days.

Many heavyweights feature on Daniel Hecht’s musical timeline; John Fahey gave him a leg up onto Will Ackerman’s Windham Hill label, where he befriended Michael Hedges and others, but his 1973 debut album, simply titled Guitar, is still arguably the finest example of his talents…

Fischer might have agreed with András Schiff that Bach is the 'most romantic of all composers', for his superfine musicianship seems to live and breathe in another world. His sonority is as ravishing as it's apt, never beautiful for its own sake, and graced with a pedal technique so subtle that it results in a light and shade, a subdued sparkle or pointed sense of repartee that eludes lesser artists. No matter what complexity Bach throws at him, Fischer resolves it with a disarming poise and limpidity. All this is a far cry from, say, Glenn Gould's egotism in the '48'. Fischer showed a deep humility before great art, making the singling out of one or another of his performances an impertinence.
