Born in Iran and now a resident/citizen of France, the background of composer Alireza Farhang reveals his nomadic character, his attraction to the Other. The extreme refinement that characterizes his music is a direct reflection of his peregrinations; his works invariably embody the Eastern and Western poles of his intellectual universe.

Born in Ukraine, Thomas de Hartmann (1885–1956), a student of both Arensky and Taneyev, achieved fame as a composer in Russia in the early 1900s, and his concert music was later played by some of the major musicians of the day, primarily in Paris. Since his death, he has been remembered mainly for his association with the Caucasian mystic G. I. Gurdjieff, whom he met in 1916, and his output for the concert hall has fallen into obscurity. The four works receiving their first recordings here reveal a major late-Romantic voice, downstream from Tchaikovsky, contemporary with Rachmaninov, and alert to the discoveries of Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

For her debut CD, pianist Olga Chelova has chosen Robert Schumann's "Kreisleriana", the "Grandes etudes de Paganini" by Franz Liszt and the "16 Waltzes op. 39" by Johannes Brahms in the four-hand version, which she has recorded together with her mentor Philippe Entremont.

British composer Sir Lennox Berkeley still needs to be more widely appreciated, and this recording puts his music into a wider context of the environment that shaped him. France played a vital part in Berkeley’s development: apart from being a Francophile, circumstances brought him into contact with Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied formally during the years 1926–1932, which Berkeley spent in Paris. While there he also met Francis Poulenc, among other artistic figures.

He came to the famous Venetian girls' orphanage Ospedale della Pietà as a young priest and violin teacher. There he also became acquainted with the instrument of the transverse flute, which was new at that time, played at the Ospedale by a girl called "Lucieta traversie". Vivaldi recognised the technical and expressive possibilities of the transverse flute and used it in a wide variety of genres.
