Aladdin’s story, taken from the Arabian One Thousand and One Nights, has been told many times and in many different ways. This operatic version by the Danish composer, Christian Frederik Emil Horneman, dates from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century and has the lush harmonies and flowing melodies you might expect from a piece of its time. Horneman (1840-1906) adds new luster to the old fairy tale about Aladdin and Princess Gulnare as they escape the forces of nocturnal magic and pursue happiness. Horneman employs motives which are tied to elements in the story, such as the Genie of the Ring which is characterized by a peculiar "mystic" harmony. Even if the opera’s subject has a certain Eastern coloring, Horneman only applies it occasionally to his music. This album presents the first complete recording of Horneman’s life’s work.

Viktor Ullmann's one-act chamber opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis was written in the Theresienstadt camp and did not see its premiere until December 16, 1975 in Amsterdam, since the performance had been banned after its dress rehearsal in 1944. The concert performance of the version by Henning Brauel and Andreas Krause (Schott), which took place on October 10, 2021 at the Prinzregententheater in Munich, was recorded for this release. Alongside the internationally renowned Austrian Kammersänger Adrian Eröd in the title role, mainly young performers sang, accompanied by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester conducted by Patrick Hahn, who made his debut here as the orchestra's principal guest conductor.

Aleksandra Brejza is a graduate of the Department of Composition and Theory of Music of the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz in the composition class of Prof. Franciszek Wozniak. She participated in the Young Composer Courses organized by the Polish Composers’ Union (1988) and in the International Composers’ Courses held as part of the Bartók Seminar in Szombathely, Hungary (1992).

The Choralis Constantinus is one of the most important motets collections of the Renaissance period. Heinrich Isaac created it in 1508 as a commission from the Constance cathedral chapter. A large part of the 375 motets is largely unknown today. The ensemble cantissimo has been working intensively on the opus for many years. Under the direction of Markus Utz, a selection of festive motets are now presented here, which bear impressive witness to the first musical heyday of the Renaissance period. A truly magnificent rediscovery!

It’s an appropriate name for a Holober-led band; in many ways, Holober’s management of his many musical inspirations is a balancing act. On one hand, much of what he’s best known for is his work with larger ensembles like the WDR Big Band, the HR Big Band, and the Gotham Jazz Orchestra, whose latest work with Holober at the helm, Hiding Out, earned a 2020 GRAMMY® nomination. On the other, there’s the magnetism of even greater self-actualization, of writing for and leading a smaller group.

Recorded at Whidbey Island's charming Langley Methodist Church, near Seattle, pianist Rich Pellegrin captures the spirit of place in these times, exploring the wide-open spaces of the mind and reconnecting with water, mountains and forest. Selected from the same vault of recordings as 2021's Solitude, Passage offers a moody, contemplative spirit as it follows an evocative narrative structure, taking the listener on a cinematic journey through their own imagination. The piano itself, a relic with its own idiosyncrasies and character, is another personality in the performance as its creaks and exhortations suggest paths for the performance to wander. Through these two volumes, an accomplished musical mind with far-reaching intentions offers the freedom to just "be."

Vaneese Thomas advances a rich musical legacy born of her father, Memphis R&B icon Rufus Thomas, and shared with her siblings Marvell (RIP) and Carla Thomas. Embracing her birthright as an African American female, Thomas explores her roots both musically and contextually with this powerful new collection.

The feeling seems to be mutual as Dávid tells us: “Third time is said to be the charm. It feels so weird trying to find the best words for the third time. I could search for my first announcement from 2019 or the one for the Redux edition in 2020. So many things have and have not happened since Roadburn got cancelled for the first time. Being so blessed that I got invited again, I just hope in April we all can make it there for real.”

This duo of trombonist, singer, and songwriter Natalie Cressman and guitarist, composer, and vocalist Ian Faquini is relatively rare in terms of instrumental pairings, but Auburn Whisper is their second, following 2019’s successful Setting Rays of Summer.
