Little is known about the cellist and composer Johann Stiastny, and what is known contradicts each other in the sources. It begins with his name: František Jan Št’astný, also known as Jean Stiasny or, indeed, Johann Stiastny, was probably born in Prague around 1764, as the son of oboist Jan Št’astný (and as younger brother of cellist Bernard Václav Št’astný). Fétis gives his birth year as 1774. He was a member of the Prague Theater Orchestra, a cellist in Mainz and Frankfurt, and a music director in Nuremberg. Given the English dedicatees of some of his works, it seems likely that he traveled – in addition to Paris – as far as London.

This disc features the classic bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins on eight unaccompanied solos, singing, playing guitar and delivering a few rare solos on piano (including on "Lightnin's Piano Boogie"). Hopkins recorded many albums during the 1960s and all are quite listenable but most are not essential – he tended to ramble at times! This Candid release is one of his better sets from the period. Other track highlights include, "Take It Easy," "Mighty Crazy," and "Mister Charlie."

Otis Spann may not have been the blues, but he was sure close to being the blues pianist. Spann provided wonderful, imaginative, tasty piano solos and better-than-average vocals, and was arguably the best player whose style was more restrained than animated. Not that he couldn't rock the house, but Spann's forte was making you think as well as making you dance, and the tracks on Otis Spann Is the Blues will do both.

The music of Francisco Correa de Arauxo, still regrettably neglected, constitutes a peak of organ literature in Spain and an exceptional bridge between the Renaissance and the Baroque. His Facultad orgánica (1626) is both a treatise on the performance of organ music and a collection of sixty-nine pieces of outstanding quality.

The Sevillian Cancionero de la Colombina and Cancionero Musical de Medinaceli are samples of a musical humanism with a distinctly Hispanic stamp, in which the cultured and the popular come together. The Castilian Cancionero de Palacio is the most valuable and representative jewel of the repertoire performed in the itinerant Courts of the Catholic Kings, including songs, Christmas carols, ballads and ‘extravagances’ by authors such as Encina, Millán, Escobar, Anchieta and Peñalosa.
