Groundtruther have an interesting concept: electric/acoustic drummer Bobby Previte and eight-string guitar genius Charlie Hunter team up with an invited third member for albums of live improvisation. The first album, Latitude, was basically a continuation of Come In Red Dog, This Is Tango Leader (Hunter and Previte's first collaboration), with Greg Osby on sax adding an additional melodic element. For Longitude, DJ Logic is the invited guest, and the roles shift considerably. Since Logic has a wider sound palette than Osby does, Previte moves away from the electronic drums and triggered samples of earlier releases toward a more standard kit as Logic takes control of the "odd sounds." Hunter assumes more of a lead role without a melodic foil and often applies thick distortion. In fact, you've never heard so much distortion coming out of Hunter's rig, and it sounds fantastic.

Lost Crowns is built around the songs from Richard Larcombe of Stars in Battledress. And with a little help from Bassist Charlie Cawood (Knifeworld, Tonochrome, Mediæval Bæbes), Keyboardist Rhodri Marsden (Prescott, Scritti Politti), and clarinet players Josh Perl (Knifeworld) and Nicola Baigent (North Sea Radio Orchestra, William D. Listening to their debut release of Every Night Something Happens, it feels like it was recorded during the sessions for Knifeworld’s Bottled Out of Eden, but also making sure that the styles between the Syd Barrett-era of Pink Floyd, the Rock In Opposition Movement, and bits of psychedelia, flowing very well into the sound and styles of Lost Crowns’ music.

Pure Imagination finds pianist Eric Reed offering fresh arrangements of traditional pop songs from classic Broadway and Hollywood productions. Supported by bassist Reginald Veal and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, Reed offers tasteful, inventive versions of such songs as "Maria," "Hello, Young Lovers," "42nd Street," "Send in the Clowns," "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "I Got Rhythm." It's a clever, engaging record that only confirms that Reed is a singular pianist.

"Mythopoetry" is the debut album of the Norwegian progressive rock act Mythopoeic Mind. It was recorded during the spring of 2018 with a handful of highly experienced Norwegian prog musicians. The goal was make a diverse and melodic journey through the lands of fantasy and myths combining classic progressive rock with unique melodies and nuanced arrangements.

The Amsterdam-based duo Wanderwelle return to Silent Season with their second album. Gathering of the Ancient Spirits is inspired by the last years of the life of Paul Gauguin, which he spent on the islands of French Polynesia. The album tells the alternative history of his search for a land that is untouched by modern society and whose inhabitants were still dependent on the gifts of nature and connected to their ancestors. During his stay, the painter encounters forgotten rituals and the primordial beings which haunt the islands since the dawn of time. In 2018, it’s exactly 115 years ago that Paul Gauguin passed away. This album is an ode to one of the greatest artists that ever lived.

"Labor of love" is the inevitable phrase to describe this album on which composer/conductor/arrangers Quincy Jones and Sammy Nestico, both of whom wrote for Count Basie and His Orchestra, assemble a top-flight big band to perform some of their vintage charts. Despite the use of the bandleader's name in the title and the pictures of him with the two principals on the front and back of the album, the music is more "beyond" than "Basie." It is true that both Jones and Nestico are steeped in the Basie band's light, rhythmic approach to playing and their music is imbued with that style. But both are better understood as graduates of the Basie school than true adherents, people who have spent the better parts of their careers applying their knowledge of swing to other endeavors, notably film scores…

With the release, the Belgian superstar continues the concept album series that started in 1995 with 'Helmut Lotti goes Classic'. The LP incluling the pre-singles 'My Girl' as well as several great soul classics from 'Wonderful World' to 'Easy' to 'So You Win Again', was recorded together with the Golden Symphonic Orchestra and was released on September 28, 2018.

The Crucible starts where The Tower ended, but it soon takes on its own hue, and it is clear that it cannot be called a ‘sequel' as such: this is very much a step further out than anywhere the band ventured on The Tower. While it is broader lyrically speaking, it is even sharper focused musically and, if possible, even more idiosyncratic and insular than ever: unarguably a Motorpsycho album. There aren’t many traditional song structures or pop format platitudes on display, and there is indeed hardly any respect paid to any trad rock song conventions on the whole album, but that’s not really what one listens to Motorpsycho for anyway, is it? From the most Neanderthal of rock riffs to the most rhythmically oblique polytonal solo sections they’ve ever recorded, this album musically seems to sum up the extremes of the band’s current interests and concerns.

The album “Fenetre sur le jardin” (Windows on to the Garden) is a special project from pianist Ksenia Kouzmenko, comprising Czech music for piano solo. Together with famous names such as Josef Suk, Bohuslav Martinu and Leos Janacek, there are two world premiere pieces on this album by Jaroslav Kvapil and Miloslav Kabelac.
