    This new release is the debut album of soprano Maureen Batt, and features a rare recording of Schubert’s “Op. 52 Lady of the Lake” song cycle and a newly commissioned work on the same epic Walter Scott poem by Nova Scotian composer Fiona Ryan. Sir Walter Scott’s Lady of the Lake is set during an uprising of the Highland clans against the Lowland Scots who are loyal to King James V. The story focuses on Ellen Douglas, a young woman who lives in exile with her father, an outlaw who has fallen out of favor with the royal court and fled to an island in Loch Katrine with his daughter. Today, the work is not that widely known but in the nineteenth century it was a bestselling book throughout Europe.

    Marie-Luise Hinrichs created a great national and international sensation in the music world with her own piano arrangements of compositions by the medieval saint Hildegard von Bingen, to which she lent new pianistic touches. She now has prepared a piano version of Pergolesi’s world-famous Stabat Mater. The pianist herself writes: “Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater fascinated me from the very beginning. The music is so deeply moving that I made it a top priority to play it on the piano and to rewrite the music for this instrument. While I was rewriting the Stabat Mater, I experienced phases of great enthusiasm for this work and even days during which I could not continue to write because its profound sadness had overwhelmed me. However, it also has a marvellous turn, when at the end it speaks of the glory of paradise and the protection offered by the cross and along with it the grace of Christ.” This release showcases a gripping and profound performance with the hallmarks typifying Marie-Luise Hinrichs and her luminous, most finely nuanced and warm piano sound.

    First performed in French at the Paris Opera in 1867, Don Carlo is in many ways an amazingly innovative work. The opera seems to underline Verdi's shift from the Manichean division between good and evil, which had been a clear, structural element of his dramaturgy up to that point in his career. In this opera, Verdi assembles all his mainstay music theatre themes: power, with its honors and burdens; the contrasts of impossible love; the conflict between father and son; and an oppressed people demanding freedom. Verdi radically revised the score in 1883, using an Italian libretto and reducing the opera from five acts to four. The popularity of Don Carlo has grown unremittingly ever since, with today's critics almost unanimously recognizing it as one of Verdi's greatest masterpieces, an opera that continues to reveal new gems. Daniel Oren is fully in control on the podium, ensuring unanimity between orchestra and singers. The Maestro softens teh dark tones of the score, which are well reflected in the visuals, choosing instead to emphasize the various changes of mood.

    Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds is Nicole Mitchell's second album for Chicago-based FPE Records.     "Bye bye blue" is launched as an ep, but Bryant seems to have spent a lot of time thinking about making the songs feel like an album. The eight tracks, of which four previously existed as singles, are cleverly linked to form a love story from beginning to end. "Sad songs" can be resembled a reflective intro, last year's "Black car" tells of the first meeting. Thereafter a wake up occurs followed by a short but effective mourning period. There are no faint moments. Each song is essential for carrying dramaturgy and history forward. It is best, however, when the voice may come true in piano debates like "Everything" and the live version of "Since you left". Among beautifully-spoken words, it's refreshing to hear how Bryant does his utmost to make the audience sing higher. "Do I have to scream?" She exclaimed.
