    Popular Problems is the thirteenth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen's Popular Problems is an uncharacteristically quick follow-up to 2012's Old Ideas. That record, cut in the aftermath of a multi-year tour, revitalized him as a recording artist. Producer Patrick Leonard (Madonna, Bryan Ferry) serves as co-writer on all but one tune on Popular Problems. While Cohen's sound has revolved around keyboards since 1988's I'm Your Man, Leonard gets that the real power in the songwriter's lyrics are best relayed through his own own simple melodies.

    Mari Kodama is a Japanese pianist, sister to pianist and duo partner Momo Kodama, and spouse of conductor Kent Nagano. She was born in Osaka, and due to her father's travels, she was raised in Germany, France, Switzerland, and England. At age 14, she entered the Paris Conservatory, studying piano with Germain Mounier and chamber music with Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux. In 1984, she gave her debut performance in Japan, followed quickly by performances in Europe and the United States. She has played at various music festivals, such as the Mostly Mozart Festival, the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, Music Days at Forest Hill, and other international festivals in Lyon, Montpelier, Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh, San Francisco, Sapporo, and Gmunden. She has performed Beethoven's complete Piano Sonatas in a series of recitals in Los Angeles and Pasadena, and recorded them for PentaTone Classics.

    Dynamic drummer Elvin Jones led two different units on the eight selections featured on this disc of late-'70s material. The first six were done in New York during 1978 and include Jones spearheading a great band with Art Pepper on three selections, backed by outstanding bassist Richard Davis and fine pianist Roland Hanna. This is first-rate quartet material with Pepper surging and the trio challenging him, then contrasting and complementing his solos with their own great work. The other two cuts were recorded in Tokyo and issued on a previous release. They include a turbulent, often evocative version of "A Love Supreme," a 26-minute-plus tribute with Jones driving the band. The music is not as special as the title indicates but is well worth hearing.

    George Benson displays virtuosity on guitar and vocals on four powerful traditional jazz tracks. The CD kicks off with a compelling version of "Love for Sale," a straight jazz dynamo featuring long solos and a torrid tempo. A laid-back rendition of "The Masquerade Is Over" (not to be confused with his later pop hit "This Masquerade") features, as the other three songs do, a long, tantalizing guitar solo from Benson. "There Will Never Be Another You" is a ferocious swing piece propelled by Benson's lightning-fast fingering. "All Blues" closes the CD on a dark, moody note; its highlights are a fluid standup bass player and a slow-rolling tempo punctuated by sharp drum kicks and timely snare and brush play. Purists who dismissed Benson's commercial recordings will find a place in their CD cabinet for this masterpiece. No frills, just fiery jazz at its best. Originally released in 1973.
