John Scofield has continued to grow and evolve year by year. Larry Goldings is almost as significant in the ensembles as the leader/guitarist, and has become the most important arrival on organ since Joey DeFrancesco and Barbara Dennerlein. Many of the tunes (all Scofield originals) use parade-like rhythms propelled by Idris Muhammad and Dennis Irwin, and the interplay between the two lead voices is quite appealing. Scofield is quite unselfish as far as taking solo space goes, and the results are quite appealing.

There are "loud" moments on this studio set, but the title cut's name is more a humorous attempt to describe the John Scofield Quartet's music than an accurate depiction of their style. The leader/guitarist, who sounds typically distinctive, welcomes guest keyboardist George Duke to five of his nine originals. Scofield's regular group of the era consisted of keyboardist Robert Aries, electric bassist Gary Grainger and drummer Dennis Chambers and they are also joined here by percussionist Don Alias.

In this saga of hatred and holy war, of power and desire, there is no victor and no truth. The god-like is diminished, power restricted, taboos are broken, love betrayed. Only the composer can afford uninterrupted pathos in the wonderful duet of Samson and Dalila in the second act, which misleads us to believe in a moving story of love. Perhaps it truly is. The story of Samson is contradictory, it is human. Camille Saint-Saëns completed the work in 1876, but was only able to bring about its first performance in 1877 through the mediation of his friend Franz Liszt with pre-eminent success in Weimar. In France, where the elements of oratorio and the influence of Wagner were not well received, the first performance would not follow for another 13 years. Samson et Dalila ranks among the masterpieces of 19th century French Opera - and among the showpieces favored by the Argentine tenor José Cura. In the recorded production he saw himself celebrated on stage as a unified three-in-one: eponymous hero, director and stage designer.

Who's Who? is a studio album by American jazz musician John Scofield. It features two different bands, one acoustic and one electric. The acoustic group, featuring Scofield's then-employer Dave Liebman on saxophones, Eddie Gómez on bass, and Billy Hart on drums, recorded "The Beatles" and "How the West Was Won". The electric group, featuring future Kenny Kirkland on keyboards, Anthony Jackson on electric bass, Steve Jordan on drums, and Sammy Figueroa on percussion, recorded the balance of the album.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States, a democracy concerned with human rights, attracted emigrants of all origins. The young nation embodied a land free from repression for the composers brought together here by Ophélie Gaillard in the spirit of humanism. After 'Alvorada', her globe-trotting cello leads us in the footsteps of Bloch, Korngold, Prokofiev, Chava Alberstein and Giora Feidmann, singing their exile. She gives us a film score (Korngold's Concerto), a prayer (From Jewish Life), an Hebraic narrative (Schelomo), a lullaby, a wedding dance… The spirit of celebration, tenderness, religious meditation: so many facets of daily life and the culture of several generations of Jewish immigrants.

Suor Leonora d'Este (1515-1575), Lucrezia Borgia's daughter, was a princess, a nun, and a musician. She left little to illuminate her history, but an obscure book of motets may at least help us understand her musical life: the Musica quinque vocum motteta materna lingua vocata, published in Venice in 1543. The book is anonymous, but it contains clues to its origins that lead us to the door of Leonora d'Este's home, the convent of Corpus Domini in Ferrara, perhaps even suggesting that she was its unidentified composer. The music here is the earliest published polyphony for nuns. This recording by Musica Secreta and Celestial Sirens allows it to be heard for the first time through carefully researched performances.

One of John Scofield's finest mid-1980s outings as a leader, STILL WARM finds the revered jazz guitarist settling into a set of funk-tinged fusion. The tight yet adventurous rhythm section of bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Omar Hakim allows Scofield to unfurl his impressively agile six-string lines, which can stray into rock and blues territory. Keyboardist Don Grolnick adds unexpected, sometimes downright strange textures to the compositions, reining in his quirky flourishes to wonderful effect on the delicately beautiful title track.

The «Kazakh State String Quartet» named in honour of Gaziza A. Zhubanova, was founded in 1988. It has won numerous prizes at international competitions and was elected best ensemble of the «Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia» in Madrid. The members of the quartet received a Master of Arts (musical performance and chamber music) in Basel, Switzerland, in 2012 after studies with Prof. Rainer Schmidt (successor at the Walter Levin chair). The two string quartets of the important composer and music teacher Gaziza Zhubanova (1927- 1993), as well as the quartet debut of the highly promising up and-coming composer Arman Zhaiym (* 1983), are the focus of this new cultural bridge-building production - realized on the 25th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan in December 2016. These works are framed by important original compositions by Kazakh composers arranged for string quartets.

The album ended up winning the Swedish Radio’s Jazz Group of the Year Award 2014, Swedish jazz magazine OJ’s Golden Disc 2015 as well as the Swedish Jazz Grammy 2015. Emperor Of Sand finds Mastodon returning to a deeply imaginative and complex conceptual storyline that ponders the nature of time. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the band conjures the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass. "Emperor of Sand is like the grim reaper," says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. "Sand represents time. If you or anyone you know has ever received a terminal diagnosis, the first thought is about time. Invariably, you ask, ‘How much time is left?'"

Heres another superb disc of Baroque/galant-style flute sonatas to join the impressive library of such music on Brilliant Classics, most recently enlarged by a release of Johan Helmich Roman, a close contemporary of Boismortier (1689-1755). Whereas Roman worked in the then-distant royal court of Sweden, and had only one collection of music published during his lifetime, Boismortier was known across Europe as both a supreme virtuoso on the flute/recorder family, and a composer for the instrument of a facility and refinement rivalled only by Bach.

Awesome Tapes From Africa is proud to release Poulo's newest recording of highly virtuosic folk-pop, fresh from the studio, broadcasting her vision of Peulh music beyond the grazing grounds and central markets of her remote home region in southwestern Mali. It's not very common to find a female singer performing publicly among the Peulh. But Poulo's mother's co-wife is Inna Baba Coulibaly, who is a celebrated singer most Malian music fans know.
