Different stages in the life of Luigi Boccherini are clearly mapped out in the music he wrote. None more so than the 6 String Trios, Op 34 written during the nine-year period when the composer left precarious Madrid, around 1781, for the tranquillity of Arenas de San Pedro, nearer Ávila, as he followed his patron, the Infante Luis de Borbón, in the latter s banishment from the Spanish court.

Rambling the familiar hills of wistful indie pop are Chicago-based combo Star Tropics, who deliver their debut LP, Lost World, via the Shelflife label. Forming the group in 2012, guitarist Scott Hibbits and bassist/singer Loren Vanderbilt turned a chance meeting over a rare Smiths B-side into a gigging quartet with the addition of drummer Dan Julien and singer/guitarist Nikki Navarro. Star Tropics took things slowly over the next few years, issuing a pair of 7" singles and quietly shaping their affable intertwining of vintage dream pop, mid-fi indie, and a dash of light shoegaze. With Lost World, their first broad statement, Star Tropics offer nine tracks of sunny guitar jangle, intimate boy/girl vocals, and surprisingly robust production that further refine the approach laid out on their early tracks. From the winsome instrumental opener, "Windfall," to the autumnal dark pop of "Chapel Hill," it's clear where their allegiances lie as they expertly re-create so many of the sounds and moods of college radio circa 1985-1990.

Get around the Bratcher family and you will hear country music. Growing up that’s all my folks Pete & Margie listened to and as much as I hate it to admit it, some how it got inside of me. My first concert was Patsy Cline’s last live performance and at the age of fourteen my album collection was Axis Bold as Love, Jimi Hendrix and Live at Folsom Prison, Johnny Cash. But I’m a blues-rock player and playing country songs just wouldn’t fit into my set list, until now.

Bonifazio Graziani, maestro di cappella at the Jesuit Church in Rome, is now emerging as one of the most eminent figures of the mid-seventeenth century Roman baroque period, the so-called Scuola romana. Like his great contemporary, Giacomo Carissimi, he favoured the genre of the solo cantata for one, two, three and four voices. The liturgical cantatas, or motets, from Musiche sagre e morali, are notable for their tremendously varied subject matter, ranging from Lenten penitential and Christmas themes to philosophical discourse on the meaning of life, as in Mal’accorto pensier (On the vanity of the world).

The overture-suite enjoyed a great popularity, especially in Germany during the first half of the 18th century in particular Bach’s so-called 'Orchestral Suites'. While the opening overture was associated with clear expectations of form, the composer was relatively free in the selection and sequence of the following movements. Georg Philipp Telemann put this into practice creatively in a diverse selection of overture-suites, the titles of which allude humorously to characters and human behaviors, as well as contemporary events and discussions: 'La Bizarre', 'La Changeante' or 'Des nations anciens et modernes'. The selection on this recording offers a wonderful insight into the veritable cosmos of Telemann’s overture-suites.

The important Polish composer Marian Sawa wrote a distinguished body of music and was the recipient of numerous awards. Many of his violin works remained undiscovered until 2012, and they embody musical idioms ranging from the experimental sounds of the 1960s to the modal harmonies of the 21st century. Cohesive and contrapuntal, often intricate and intimate, Sawa’s music for violin uses innovative sound techniques and is witty and virtuosic. It is performed on this recording by the violinist to whom many of the works were dedicated.

What sounds, except the dinner bell, could be as exhilarating as a baroque cantata for soprano and trumpet? Bach's solo Cantata #51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, is deservedly one of his most popular and oft-performed, not only because its rousing strains could wake a congregation of beefy Bürghers any Sunday of the year but also because it's brilliantly constructed, a composition so refined that every phrase is crucial. The performance of it on this CD is as polished as any I've ever heard, and that would be enough to justify five-times-five stars, but the other soprano/trumpet pieces.

Except for Respighi's delicious confection, which is heard in Malcolm Sargent's concert suite, the works on this recording are rarely heard. Puccini's youthful Preludio shows melodic invention and warmth anticipating his later operatic style. Rossini's little-known Bassoon Concerto is full of charm while Verdi's Capriccio fuses noble and carnivalesque qualities. Far more than a curio, Paganini's virtuosic Concertino for Horn, Bassoon and Orchestra offers an intriguing slant on the great violinist's work.

These six world première recordings present one of percussion's greatest masters in a panorama of works by leading composers of our time. This remarkable journey through sound and rhythm includes electronic extensions such as the dramatically funky climaxes to Bruno Mantovani's Le Grand Jeu, a dreamy musical halo around metal instruments in Marco Stroppa's Auras and Jean-Claude Risset's sound illusions in Nature contre Nature. Peter Eötvös's Thunder is a unique quest to explore the potential of a single bass timpano, while Philippe Hersant revisits Berlioz, Schubert and Gounod in his Trois petite études. René Leibowitz's Three Caprices were among the first works written for solo vibraphone.

A constellation of star names shoot into view, new in April, from Antonio Faraò who is touring this spring with Jazz Messengers legend Benny Golson. Quite a procession into and out of the studio on a dozen of the Italian pianist’s extrovert compositions and arrangements, the styles straddling jazz-rock fusion, funk, smooth jazz, R&B and hip-hop, guests including Marcus Miller, Snoop Dogg, Manu Katché and Didier Lockwood. A spacey showbizzy start to the whole shebang hovers into view right at the beginning featuring a peculiar kind of movie trailer curtain raiser. Skipping on rapidly to ‘Line’ featuring rapper Krayzie Bone (Anthony Henderson to his mum) for a lively bit of cussin’ and no holding back, the high energy radiating outwards a case of harmless entertainment no more no less, Faraò surfacing to fly somehow like Herbie Hancock back in his ‘lost’ 1980s period. Be afraid, be very afraid.
