Pianist Cedar Walton's debut as a leader is quite impressive. This CD reissue (which includes a "new" rendition of "Take the 'A' Train") showcases Walton with bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Billy Higgins on "My Ship," features a pair of quartet numbers with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, has tenor saxophonist Junior Cook in Dorham's place on two other pieces (including "Come Sunday") and uses a quintet on the two remaining selections. One of the top hard bop-based pianists to emerge during the 1960s, Walton also contributed four originals to his excellent set.

A great little series that goes way deeper than the salsa you might expect from the title – as the approach here is to pick tracks from many years before, but which still have strong resonance with the pride and power of the Latin scene of the 70s! The collection includes lots of tracks that might come as a real surprise – some larger orchestra material, tracks by trios, and other Latin styles that aren't normally associated with the spirit of salsa – which usually seems to draw most from the descarga years, and the small combos to emerge in the 60s. Instead, this series traces the music much farther back – and includes loads of hard-edged cuts that resonate surprisingly well with later salsa dura – including many records that you might have otherwise passed by!

An elaborately produced piece of vinyl, Journey to Dawn was, alas, the result of yet another campaign to prematurely place Nascimento into the U.S. market in a big way. The cosmopolitan tropicalismo movement continued to leave its mark on Nascimento, placing the bossa nova on the back burner and replacing it with an urgency often generated by four-square rock rhythms and electric guitars, percussive sounds from the Brazilian jungle, and some orchestrations from California.

Their style and instrumentation is informed by the Belfast traditional scene, in which all of the members take an active part. Inspired by the traditional music of their city and their island, they take influence from their own substantial cultural heritage, but also all walks of life; and this is evident in the rich, organic and beautiful music they make.

Among the great things that I remember about these sessions were the superb players and singers who just showed up. Richard Ace had been living in England, but dropped in while on vacation in Jamaica and contributed great keyboards to three selections. The Ethiopian showed up and agreed to cut four songs backed by the Gladiators. Joseph Hill, lead singer of Culture, sat in the control room with Sylvan and I for an hour and told me that the Gladiators were his favorite group. The additional highlight of these sessions was watching Sylvan mixing top ranking dub tracks of the Gladiators best riddims.

Bill O’Connell’s pianism has always been known for its razor-sharp rhythmic sense, clean articulation and phrasing which is as affectionate as it is unfussy. And although the idiom often demands fire and verve one must never lose sight of O’Connell’s graceful dynamics which give his lines interesting twists and turns that dart and swerve with spontaneous freedom. With friends like Randy Brecker, Craig Handy, Conrad Herwig, Andrea Brachfeld and Dan Carillo on hand, Jazz Latin is more than a release, it is an event.

Diogal is an author, composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer. His songs are imbued with sounds originating from his country, Senegal, while being part of a mixed western folk style. It is in Wolof that Diogal deplores exclusion and individualism, and their social and environmental effects. In his new album "Roadside", he calls for kindness, sharing and mutual aid. It encourages everyone to have a positive vision of what we have, rather than live in greed and frustration, and live in respect for others and the Earth. With this 5th album, Diogal returns to the realization of acoustic albums, in a more refined style. He introduces original sound creations from the sound design work he has explored in recent years. They color some songs, and also appear as instrumental interludes that lead the listener to travel in his imagination between two songs …

Out of Sweden comes new jazz sounds from guitarist Anders Nilsson's group Aorta, a group that glances briefly back at the late '60s and '70s, then forges ahead, showing some possible directions for the music to go if it is to remain vital. Aorta probably won't be doing a week at the Vanguard any time soon, but if there's any music that can even remotely be called jazz and has any chance of capturing the ears of teens and twenty-somethings (the holy grail in music sales), this is it.
