Born in Texas, Orbison began singing in a rockabilly and country-and-western band in high school. He was signed by Sam Phillips, of Sun Records, in 1956, but his greatest success came with Monument Records. Soon afterward, Orbison was struck by a number of personal tragedies while his record sales declined. In the 1980s, he experienced a resurgence in popularity through the success of several cover versions of his songs, and in 1988, co-founded the Traveling Wilburys, a rock supergroup with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne. He died of a heart attack later that year, at the age of 52. One month later, his song "You Got It" (1989), co-written with Lynne and Petty, was released as a solo single and became his first to break the U.S. Top 10 in twenty-five years.

The programming for this, the final double CD in the series, is somewhat different from earlier releases. The first CD presents two complete Masses, the Missa Peccata mea by Lupus Hellinck and the Missa Nisi Dominus by Pierre de Manchicourt; these are complemented by a number of short liturgical works. The second CD demonstrates how a polyphonic Mass would have sounded in the context of a celebration of the Mass in the 16th century.

Sinatra left Capitol in 1960 to start his own record label, Reprise Records, and released a string of successful albums. In 1965, he recorded the retrospective September of My Years and starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music. After releasing Sinatra at the Sands, recorded at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Vegas with frequent collaborator Count Basie in early 1966, the following year he recorded one of his most famous collaborations with Tom Jobim, the album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was followed by 1968's Francis A. & Edward K. with Duke Ellington.

There are some new protagonists in the Chicago jazz scene, due to the revelation of a younger generation of musicians and the defection of some of the big names to other American regions, like Jeff Parker and Rob Mazurek. One of these Chicago exponents, gradually gaining importance, is pianist and composer Matt Piet, a former student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Leader of two fundamental bands in the city, Matt Piet Trio and Four Letter Words, and one of the vertices of the Rempis / Piet / Daisy triangle, he has broken into the Chicago improvised music community as a “melodic player” whose “tonefulness is thrillingly shaken by a rhythmic volatility and a fractal sense of phrasing”, according to the jazz journalist Peter Margasak, who compared his sound to Cecil Taylor in the late ‘50s and the early ‘60s.

Too often, over the last twenty years or so, jazz has drifted from the rhythmic hipness of the blues-drenched, dance-inflected tenacity of its origins. Regardless of ambitions toward artistic seriousness in multiple shapes and iterations, jazz began as good time fun entertainment driven by propulsive allure. Its fundamental identity never strayed too far from incisive swing. No matter what name was hung on it, jazz was a music of surging uplift. Listen to Pops late-'20s sessions, Earl Hines, Bechet, Ellington, Lunceford, Basie and the astonishing depth of melodic brilliance and percussive joy that emerged when Monk and Diz, Bird and Roach revamped expressive possibilities.

This new music intentionally combines the individual talents of emerging Posi-Tone leaders into a cohesive camaraderie of artists that work together as a unified collective to consciously create a series of meaningful musical presentations. This "New Faces" group (trumpeter Josh Lawrence, vibraphonist Behn Gillece, saxophonist Roxy Coss, pianist Theo Hill, bassist Peter Brendler and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza) was carefully assembled and supervised by producer Marc Free, given the collective mission, and then sent off together to explore a wonderland of melodic mysteries and harmonic possibilities.

The great Norwegian cellist Truls Mork gathers into a box set of 5 CDs no less than 9 concertos from the vast repertory for cello and orchestra. Recorded during a decade (1991-2001) and released in their time as individuals, these recordings comprise the standard works of his instrument with huge appeal to audiences, namely opuses by Haydn, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Miaskovsky, and some contemporary pieces by Aaron Jay Kernis. In the recorded performances of these pieces, Mork is paired by top notch orchestras such as London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and world class conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Paavo Jarvi, Eiji Oue and Iona Brown. The captured sound is marvellous throughout.

There’s no mistaking the message of “We’re All in The Dance,” the title track of singer Rachel Caswell’s latest album. It’s a lovely waltz, the leitmotif song of the 2006 film Paris, je t’aime, which constitutes 18 miniature meditations on the joys, discontents and consequences of love in the City of Love by an international cohort of renowned directors. The English lyrics rendered by Feist over the film’s final credits pair the dance of life (“partners are lost and found looking for one more chance”) with the dance of music (“feel the beat; music and rhyme while there is time”). Somehow, through her purity of tone, intelligent phrasing, and flowing time feel, Caswell cosigned by an ascendant solo by her younger sister, Grammy-nominated violinist Sara Caswell navigates an alternate, bespoke pathway through a song whose simplicity and elegance pose a challenge to a singer steeped in the complexities of jazz expression.

The 1960s and 1970s were great times for soul-jazz, a form of jazz that was heavily influenced by R&B. In contrast to the cerebral, abstract tendencies of avant-garde jazz, soul-jazz outfits like the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Gene Harris’ Three Sounds and the organ combos of Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott, Richard “Groove” Holmes and Jimmy McGriff favored groove-oriented accessibility and made a concerted effort to attract soul and funk fans. Soul-jazz, thankfully, did not disappear after its 1960s/1970s heyday, and in the 21st Century, one group that has been carrying on the soul-jazz tradition is Groovexpress (whose members hail from Australia, New Zealand and Los Angeles).

Feeling romantic? If you are, or if you want to be, put on the new album from Wayne Powers, If Love Were All. This album contains familiar and beloved songs on the subject of love and romance. The things that really matter, you know? The things that are keeping me going in these dark and frightening days are music and my girlfriend. And if I can squeeze both of them into a night, well, that’s a perfect night. Pour some wine, turn the lights low, and put on music that is timeless. On this release, Wayne Powers’ first in a very long time, the vocalist is backed by Ziad Rabie on tenor saxophone, Keith Davis on piano, Ron Brendle on upright bass, and Al Sergel on drums.

New Zealand bassist, composer and arranger Olivier Holland (who has worked on 23 CD albums to date, or has produced them himself) has committed the crème de la crème of German jazz musicians to Big Ticket. Here, four absolute virtuosos bring together their unmistakable sound and musical ability to create a sound portrait that is second to none in terms of uniqueness. "Big Ticket" sounds warm, powerful, full; the compositions - all from Holland's pen - lyrical, punchy, emotional, expressive. Everything comes together in a sound that, with a dynamic range from quiet to bombastic, does not just belong but has to be experienced. A coveted CD album, very interesting not only for jazz fans, but for lovers of well-made and sounding music.

A 19-CD box set? Twenty one and a half hours of music? A 72-page book? Artefacts that include a receipt for her first piano? Who said the music industry no longer had money to burn?
For anybody unfamiliar with Sandy Denny’s yearning, evocative songs, her teeteringly vulnerable vocal style and the erratic contours of a career that ended shockingly in a fall downstairs in 1978 when she was 31, this eye-watering project may seem like ludicrous indulgence.

Capital Letters followed up their well received return to live touring by releasing brand new music with 2015's "Wolverhampton" and it's dub counterpart. Since then, they've continued to perform their authentic brand of British reggae to enthusiastic audiences across Europe as well as at home in the UK. A brand new album is in the pipeline, but we thought we'd treat everyone to a tasty appetiser in the shape of brand new track "Judgement Day" released as a limited edition four track vinyl 12". Capital Letters were formed more than forty years ago and so it seemed appropriate to entrust the mixing of "Judgement Day" to someone with similar longevity in reggae, Bristol reggae stalwart Chris Potter, better known by his pseudonym Compendulum.
