Color Rit begins right where Festival left off, with Brazilian-flavored electric jazz and Rit handling the acoustic guitar, but soon veers closer to a more generic L.A.-based series of sounds and textures. Ritenour adds electric guitar to several tracks, although the acoustic instrument dominates the album. Ernie Watts is back on a couple of cuts, but the bulk of the backup is provided by the likes of keyboardists Dave Witham, Larry Williams and Russ Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Johnson, percussionist Paulinho Da Costa and drummer Carlos Vega. "All the Same Tonight," "Malibu" and "I Can't Let Go," with vocals by Phil Perry, thankfully don't sound quite as commercial as previous attempts on earlier Ritenour albums. Yet this CD represents a slight dip for Ritenour at a stage in his career when his albums were gradually becoming classier and more musical.

This international version of Universal’s 2007 box set called 50 Greatest Songs (here called 50) follows the same track listing and sequence as the U.S. version, and it effectively (if a bit randomly) hits all the key songs from Marvin Gaye's seminal stay with Motown Records, from early hits like “Ain’t That Peculiar” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” through the urban jazz-pop of later songs like “Distant Lover” and “Trouble Man.” What it doesn’t have is anything from Gaye's short, subsequent stay with Columbia Records, which means “Sexual Healing,” certainly one of Gaye's greatest songs, is absent here: perhaps the one omission in a pretty comprehensive collection.

This set underlines various lessons. One of them is not to disdain the first three symphonies. They may not have the torrid solar flares of the last three but they certainly deserve as much attention as comes the way of Balakirev 1, the Borodins, the Glazunovs and the Lyapunovs. Pletnev is a most caring and thoughtful shaper of moods as the First Symphony shows. The playing is finely nuanced to match the strong balletic character. Indeed it made me think of Nutcracker more than once.
