After serving as a sideman with James Williams, Chick Corea and a host of others, Wilson makes the most of his debut as a leader. Assembling a supporting cast of top-notch veterans, including pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Ben Riley, Wilson is a joy to listen to on any of his axes. Five of the nine songs are Wilson originals, with the leader's mesmerizing soprano sax on "A Joyful Noise," his spirited flute on the lovely "Trapaceria," and strong alto sax on his intense "Sisko" all meriting strong praise. Also worth mentioning is the exotic take of Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge," which is quite a change from the usually slower dramatic arrangements in which Duke Ellington featured his soloists.

Slovenian guitar ace Samo Salamon fronts a European ensemble akin to one of those legendary all-star jazz summits, but of course these colorific works veer off into an experimental wonderland of improvisation with split-second paradigm shifts amid the ensemble's synergistic discourses. Nonetheless, the respective musicians are at the top of their game here, as Salamon arranged for drummers Roberto Dani and Christian Lillinger to generate the seismic currents by staying in synch but not necessarily executing the same patterns.

Two complete Rockpalast TV shows from Germany (1998 / 2008) plus a bonus concert from 2002, 12-page booklet. The Rockpalast performance of June 21, 1998 at the Loreley is a significant example of the first international phase of success. It was Tito & Tarantula's third concert in Germany and it shows that their musical reputation did not crumble to dust in broad daylight at all. At that time the violinist and mandolin player Lyn Bertles gave the band a more folkloristic touch. That and the simmering mixture of blues, rock and Americana with Mexican influences put the German crowd under the same spell as the shady spectators in the famous movie scene…

"Signs" is not merely a return the artist's guitar-based beginnings, but an embodiment of an even more elemental sound. Beyond focusing attention on his soloing prowess, it is about recapturing the spirit of the early blues, where the guitar was front and center.

"Portico Quartet stake claims to territory occupied by Radiohead, Cinematic Orchestra and Efterklang". The Guardian ***** Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet has always been an impossible band to pin down. Sending out echoes of jazz, electronica, ambient music and minimalism, the group created their own singular, cinematic sound over the course of three studio albums, from their 2007 breakthrough 'Knee-Deep in the North Sea', and 2010 John Leckie produced 'Isla', to the self titled record 'Portico Quartet' in 2012.

The second cello concerto, entitled: Y: la fiesta está en pleno apogeo – And: The feast is in full progress (1993), is based on a poem by the Chuvash poet Gennadi Aigi. The vision of a raging mass of people awaiting the last Judgment is transformed into music by the composer with gripping, immediate, expressive force, free of graphic patterns. A moment of glory not for Gubaidulina only, but for David Geringas on cello, too. And as a bonus on this CD: Diez Preludios –Ten Preludes for Cello, in Vladimir Tonkha’s equally inspired interpretation. Both cellists are the dedicatees of the works they perform.

The new Soft Fangs album opens with a hollow acoustic guitar, playing a despondent riff in isolation. It sounds as if it could have been recorded from the other side of the room, from a dusty tape recorder. The tone is hot and cold at once, flitting between scratchy strums and warm finger plucks. Then the rest of the band joins. Thrashing waves of drums, fuzzed-out guitars and touches of piano all circle that guitar riff.

St. Louis based indie extraordinaire Tony Crown is no stranger to the art of storytelling. A skillful songwriter, multi-faceted performer, and visual artist, Crown’s brush strokes extend beyond the canvas regardless of the medium he’s working in. His musical resume is like a time transcending playlist on shuffle, hopping from Jane and Anthony’s subdued lounge stylings, to Lawrence and the Lion’s folk-rooted Americana, to fronting the lively rock of Living Room Lava. Crown’s past musical projects fared well, receiving placement in AMC’s Hell on Wheels, CW11’s Hart of Dixie, and ABC’s Brothers and Sisters. Recently, Crown released the singles “In the Now” and “Killing Machine” off of his debut solo album Distant from the Universe. While the LP isn’t set to release in full until July 7th 2017, its first two singles have already secured placement in Showtime’s The Affair and AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead respectively.

When a complex arrangement of music for a band is distilled down to a single instrument, that’s when the strength of the song’s structure, the essential beauty of its melody and harmony, is fully revealed. We know the basic building blocks of Pat Metheny’s compositions are solid and often sublime, so it’s great to be reminded of them. Peo Alfonsi, the Sardinian who first came to international attention when Al Di Meola chose to pay in a duo with him and then incorporated him into his New World Sinfonia, plays an acoustic guitar and here treats 13 of Metheny’s tunes to his own interpretations.

Of all of bassist Charles Mingus' bands, one of the most exciting was the sextet that he took to Europe in 1964. Consisting of the unique Eric Dolphy (on alto, bass clarinet and flute), tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Jaki Byard, drummer Dannie Richmond and trumpeter Johnny Coles, this band really stretched the limits of bebop. Mingus (greatly assisted by Richmond) constantly changed rhythms when the music became too comfortable and was always pushing his sidemen to play above their capabilities.
