Good band which sounds pretty much canterbury like. The band format includes keys, sax, drums and vocals. The biggest influence for ISLAND definitely seems to be VdGG, and the band certainly approaches progressive rock from the darker end of the spectrum. Sometimes the influence of GENTLE GIANT gets very clear in their music.

This set includes a 1978 Paris concert as well as a 1980 show taped in East Berlin. Formed in Berlin in September 1967 by Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream are simply one of the most important groups to have emerged on the German music scene of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Always guided by the genius of Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream developed a sound based on the use of synthesizers and keyboards. In Britain, John Peel soon began to promote the band on his influential radio show which ultimately led to Tangerine Dream becoming one of the first acts to sign to Richard Branson's newly established Virgin label in 1973. Tangerine Dream's music would influence a whole host of musicians who followed in their wake, such as Julian Cope.

At the tail end of 1997, The Enid released White Goddess, their tenth studio album. Unlike Tripping…White Goddess concerned itself less with dance/house rhythms or the current sounds of the day. In a sense, it has more in common with The Spell - a return to sublime instrumental storytelling and soundscapes, though with a greater sense of maturity in its composition, and less of the playfullness of their pre-Something Wicked output. This album sees the first credit for Max Read's Choir - an impressive (though undoubtedly laborious), multi-layered vocal technique he would develop in subsequent recordings, and which would become synonymous with the sound of the Journey's End trilogy albums.

The family history of Luigi Merci (1695 ca. - London 1750 ca.) is somewhat uncertain. He was probably of Italian-French origins but is generally considered to be English instead. He was in the service of James Brydges, count of Caernarvon and first Duke of Chandos, in around 1720. In those years, Merci published a few sonatas for flute and basso continuo and dedicated them to his patron. In 1730 he married Ann Hampshire and moved to the Covent Garden area of London. His printed op. 3 consists of two collections of sonatas: those for recorder (the last of their kind in England, where the transverse flute was becoming increasingly predominant), and the very interesting and rare sonatas for bassoon. Merci's personality as a wind player clearly emerges in these six sonatas. Indeed, their expressive quality is remarkable. Merci's style might be defined as a marriage of the Italian school, with its felicitous melodic sense so suitable to the melancholy character of the bassoon, and the French style, abundantly represented by the refined ornaments which the composer himself carefully wrote out. Moreover, Merci pays homage to his homeland through the insertion of two lovely "Scottish airs" which exalt the rustic and rhythmic character of the bassoon.

The foundations of Marc Minkowski’s career lie in Baroque music, and he has enjoyed a long relationship with Warner Classics, but this Johannes-Passion (St John Passion) is his first Bach for the label. The work’s terse drama – here presented through just nine singers – is ideally suited to both his scrupulous musicianship and his keen sense of theatre. The French conductor describes Bach’s great masterpieces as “a journey you have to prepare for meticulously, over a long period of time… You come back from it like an explorer comes back from Everest or the Moon – transformed.”

Husband-and-wife duo Vadim Gluzman and Angela Yoffe made their first recording for BIS last year, with young Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach’s Preludes on BIS-CD-1242. Both the music and the musicians were roundly praised, for instance on the Classics Today web-site: ‘Vadim Gluzman and Angela Yoffe push their collective virtuosity sky-high. Enthusiastically recommended.’

Herman's Hermits were one of those odd 1960's groups that accumulated millions of fans, but precious little respect. Indeed, their status is remarkably similar to that of the Monkees and it's not a coincidence that both groups' music was intended to appeal to younger teenagers. The difference is that as early as 1976, the Monkees began to be considered cool by people who really knew music; it has taken 35 years for Herman's Hermits to begin receiving higher regard for their work. Of course, that lack of respect had no relevance to their success: 20 singles lofted into the Top 40 in England and America between 1964 and 1970, 16 of them in the Top 20, and most of those Top Ten as well. Artistically, they were rated far lower than the Hollies, the Searchers, or Gerry & the Pacemakers, but commercially, the Hermits were only a couple of rungs below the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
