This disc has most of the right ingredients for a classic Manon Lescaut. Plácido Domingo and Montserrat Caballé in their prime were two of the loveliest Puccini voices of the late 20th century. Their Spanish temperaments only aid in conveying the passion in this story of a love that survives unpleasant parents, religious vows, and arrest, and ends without a shred of dignity in the swamps of Louisiana. The main drawback here is that conductor Bruno Bartoletti, for all of his experience, could've given a fresher account of the score and, in general, the whole thing sounds a bit studio bound. However, operatic decisions are made on the basis of voices, and this set has them. –David Patrick Stearns

Phantom Lake: Northern Gothic 3 is the final installment of the trilogy which began in 2002 with Northern Gothic and Box of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2 in 2007. For this album Laura Weller introduced the idea of writing songs inspired by childhood in a neighborhood called Phantom Lake. Jeff Kelly also drew from youth, remembering the grey skies and endless evergreens on trips to Lost Lake, near Shelton, Washington, as well as many vacations to the Washington coast. These are the same landscapes that populated the songs on the previous Northern Gothic albums. This is a dark album. It is about obsession and sorrow and murder and too much whisky. The characters that permeate these songs exist in the shadows, often in the margins of society. These lost souls of the northern gothic world of Phantom Lake remind us of what it is to be human.

You can feel immediately that he grasps the balletic nature as well as the symphonic majesty of Tchaikovsky's score. The interpretation is brisk, light, nimble, well balanced and masterfully cohesive. Right from the beginning of the overture you will understand what I mean! The playing of the Utah Symphony is transparent, clean, and full of color. You can tell they enjoy playing it! I bought this recording years ago on Vanguard Everyman LPs. The CD transfer is excellent. Grab the it while you can still get it!

With the exception of the title cut on the first album, Those Were The Days (which is given a rather stodgy treatment), this CD is vintage Percy Faith. The second LP, Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet, came out in 1969, when Faith's new sound of orchestra with female chorus had just hit its stride. The trademark harpsichord is there, too. I had this album on LP when I was eight years old, and am pleased to discover that it is absolutely delightful all these years later. The two tunes from Hair are highlights of the album, brimming with energy and delicacy at the same time. Faith also commemorates the tenth anniversary of his big instrumental hit, Theme from A Summer Place, by writing a new version with female chorus. It doesn't displace memories of the original, but it is a welcome piece on this album. If you like your '60's music in a form that is evergreen, this Percy Faith CD is for you.

"4Flusher" is the fourth album released by Suga Shikao. The album reached #4 on the Oricon weekly charts and charted for six weeks, selling 155,520 copies. The limited edition of this album came with a special live disc. The songs "Nami Hikari" and "Sorosoro Ikanakucha" were later used as insert songs of episode 4 and 13 of the anime adaption of Honey and Clover in 2005.
