Guitar giants John Scofield and Pat Metheny teamed up for the first time on records for this CD. The collaboration does take awhile to get going and it is not until the fourth cut, the bluish "Everybody's Party," that the sparks begin to fly; fortunately the momentum does not let up much throughout the remainder of the CD. All of the selections (including two blues) are originals by either of the guitarists and, with the accompaniment of bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart, this varied set generally lives up to expectations.

This new project is very close to the universe of Mathias Ruëgg’s last records: Third Dream, with the Vienna Art Orchestra and Petites Visions (chamber music). He therefore joined Alban Darche and Jean-Christophe Cholet with great pleasure as a co-composer. The idea is to create an original work inspired by Francis Poulenc’s one, to build his “Tombeau”, like Maurice Ravel who created with his Tombeau de Couperin a timeless work, which deeply anchored its author in a French tradition initiated by François Couperin or Jean-Philippe Rameau.

The six quartets, Op. 71 Nos. 1-3 and Op. 74 Nos. 1-3, belong to the period of Haydn's first visit to London, which lasted from January 1791 to June 1792. The autographs are actually dated 1793, but Haydn himself included them in the list of works he had composed while in england, and there are reasons for believing that this latter suggestion is the more likely. One reason is the occasional evidence that Haydn was trying to reproduce orchestral effects: the splendour of Salomon's orchestra was still ringing in his ears and he may, half consciously, have tried to imitate it in his quartets. a second and more important one is the fact that each of the six works is prefaced, unlike any of Haydn's other quartets, by an introductory passage or motif, however short, that remains distinct from the first movement even though it may exert some influence over it. This unique feature unquestionably derives from the 12 ''London'' Symphonies, all but one of which begin with a slow introduction.

Tom Jones' greatest strength is as a showman, making Tom Jones Live in Las Vegas one of his strongest records. As he tears through his well-constructed show, the vocalist works the reserved crowd into a near-frenzy, which makes him sing stronger and more dramatically. However, Tom Jones is at his best when he is at his most melodramatic, so this isn't a flaw.

There is no doubt that The Beatles were a huge influence over the global acceptance of rhythm & blues music and what would eventually become soul. However certain record labels also played an important role and it isn't just Detroit's Berry Gordy who could take all the credit as over in New York, Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson et al were also on a mission. Through Ray Charles the east coast story firmly established itself as a contender and rather interestingly this set kicks off with Bobby Darin's version of 'What'd I say' which charted at No. 24 in the pop charts. This set continues in that theme with some of the artists not always performing in a style that was expected of them. This is another fascinating entry in Jasmine's early roots of soul series and like the rest it is a superb CD full of excellent and surprising tracks.

Released at the end of a period of heavy touring that brought Culture to Europe and the United States, Wings of a Dove found the vocal trio of Joseph Hill, Kenneth Dayes, and Albert Walker returning to a roots style. Because of this, many have believed that the recordings may actually pre-date those for the 1991, dancehall-flavored Three Sides to My Story. Produced by group frontman Hill, Wings of a Dove is still informed by the slicker production sensibilities of the 1990s: the soft, glimmering keyboard work of Clive Hunt, Tony Brisset, and Winston Wright matching the glossy sound of Dwight Pickney's (Zap Pow) rhythm guitar.

Mods (originally ‘modernists’) emerged in Britain in the early 1960s: they were mostly smartly turned out young men who loved European fashion, R&B, motor scooters and late nights. They spent most of their wages on clothes, frequenting the new breed of shops sprouting up in London’s Carnaby Street. Though some pop groups of the day, like the Who and the Small Faces, came out of the Mod scene, the music that Mods chose to dance to in the Marquee and mod clubs like the Goldhawk was American soul and R&B. Here’s a fine selection of that music in this two-disc collection of R&B from the late ‘50s and early ‘60s.
