R&B purists have often argued that the Commodores did their most essential work before 1977. It was in 1977 that they crossed over to the pop/adult contemporary audience in a major way with "Easy," and subsequent hits like 1978's "Three Times a Lady" and 1979's "Still" (both of which reached number one on Billboard's pop singles charts) certainly weren't the work of R&B snobs. Of course, Lionel Richie never claimed to be an R&B purist, although it is safe to say that the Commodores were still a hardcore funk/soul band when their third album, Movin' On, came out in 1975. From an R&B standpoint (as opposed to a pop or adult contemporary standpoint), this is one of their most essential releases.

Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan brings here his trademark "contrafacts" (a music making method that shares the chord progressions with other compositions) approach to this first SteepleChase leader outing challenging us (maybe?) to guess the tunes he is employing. Smulyan whose professional career took shape by joining Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herds at age 22 (1978) has won Critics’ and Readers’ Poll awards numerous times by Downbeat and JazzTimes, among others.

He Chameleon is above all a drummer. But this Swiss multi-instrumentalist also plays almost every other instrument on his records. Fred Chappuis, his real name, concocts his progressive tracks since 2015, and, being also sound engineer, also recorded his first album "Humanity 2.0".

This album has been recorded to help fund their 2018 European tour. These new versions are complete reinterpretations of seven popular Anubis tracks, performed mostly on acoustic instruments, some being instruments they’d never normally dream of using. Absent - for the time being - are the electric guitars, the overdriven B3, the pounding drums, the rickenbacker bass, the synthesizers and the ubiquitous mellotron. ‘Technicolour Afterlife’ in it’s original arrangement was to be the eponymous title track of the record eventually released as 230503, their debut. It’s the final page of that particular story which they shelved back in 2005.

The complete recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! Both albums were a bit unusual for the label – in that The Winner's Circle was sort of a blowing/jam session type record, cut with some of the big poll winners of the year, but with shorter tracks than the usual Prestige-styled set of that nature. The lineup includes Donald Byrd, Al Cohn, Eddie Costa, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones – and Coltrane's a bit buried in the group, but gets out some nice licks from time to time.

Georg Philipp Telemann is one of the composers whose cause Ricercar has always championed with fervour. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of his death, Ricercar now presents a reissue of its vast repertory, which makes up a complete portrait of the output of this inspired contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach: his sonatas, trios, fantasias, concertos and suites written for all sorts of instruments are accompanied by several sacred compositions, cantatas, and a St Matthew Passion which, like a number of other works in the set, is released on disc for the first time.

The future "King of Swing", Benjamin David Goodman, was born on the 30th May, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Jewish immigrants and grew up with 11 brothers and sisters. Benny Goodman learned to play the clarinet in a synagogue and took his first steps as a musician on the pleasure boats on the nearby Lake Michigan.
He worked for several years from the middle of the Twenties with Ben Pollack, but also played with several other bands. Goodman met the well-known music producer John Hammond in 1933, and was persuaded by Hammond to form his first big-band…
