This is one of the very best records from these excellent players and the recording is absolutely first-class. In the most famous of the Opp 54 and 55 quartets, Op 54 No 2 in C major, virtuosity is a key element in music of extraordinary force and rhetorical boldness. The spacious, muscular opening movement combines drama and eccentricity from the outset. Haydn majestically asserts the key of C major in two five-bar phrases, separated by a pause, though initial confidence is twice questioned by the first violin’s tiny piano tailpiece; then, after another pause, the theme erupts in the distant, unscripted key of A flat major, an astonishing harmonic move so early in a work of 1788.

On 5 April 1784 Joseph Haydn wrote to the Viennese music publishers Artaria and Co accepting an offer of three hundred florins for a set of new string quartets, which he thought would be finished that July. In fact Artaria had to wait three years, until July 1787, before they received all six of the set that was to become known as Opus 50.

Marillion emerged from the brief progressive rock revival of the early '80s to become an international recording and touring phenomenon who have sold more than 15 million albums and host fan clubs in ten nations. The band helped pioneer the development of fan-funded music and touring support, beginning in 1997. Marillion's music, while remaining on the progressive, artful side of rock, has evolved to embrace post-punk pop, indie and experimental rock, and even funk and electronica. Each album is different than its predecessor.

Except for a couple of concertos recorded by Stanley Weiner a quarter of a century ago, this is the first representation in the catalogue of Rameau’s contemporary, Jacques Aubert. A member of the Vingt-quatre Violons du Roy, he became leader of the Opera orchestra, also frequently appearing as a soloist in the public Concert spirituel series. His unwieldily-titled Suites of 1730 are regarded as antecedents of the French symphony (the preface sanctions performance by a larger body than a trio, justifying the approach here), but both the present works from the set commence with a French overture, continue with half a dozen dance forms, and end in a chaconne whose refrain is interspersed with episodes.
