September 22, 2017 is the release date for Harvesting Minds, Italian trombonist Filippo Vignato’s debut album as leader on the CAM JAZZ label. After his first album, Plastic Breath (Auand, 2016), and being nominated “Best New Talent” in 2016 by the Musica Jazz magazine’s prestigious Top Jazz index, Vignato brings together some of the most influential young European musicians for a new, fully acoustic quartet: Giovanni Guidi on piano, Mattia Magatelli on double bass and Attila Gyárfás on drums. The electric atmospheres of his debut album are only apparently distant from the dry sounds of Harvesting Minds: in the passage between these two works emerge the sharp musical vision and the personality of Vignato that, together with his uncommon talent for composing, trace a coherent and evolving path.

The first of two Chico Freeman recordings for the soon-defunct Black-Hawk label finds the leader switching between tenor, alto, sopranino, soprano, bass clarinet, bass flute and C flute. John Purcell "only" limits himself to five reeds (alto, baritone, oboe, alto flute and piccolo), and the horns are joined by either Kenny Kirkland or Mark Thompson on piano, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Elvin Jones. The many combinations of reeds highlight this set, which has originals by Freeman, Mark Thompson ("Monk 2000"), John Stubblefield, Alex North and Cecil McBee ("Blues on the Bottom"), in addition to the standard "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise." The style ranges from straight-ahead to more exploratory sounds, and this colorful album is worth searching for.

An idiosyncratic, girlish voice, snappy, flawless deliverance, and an irrepressible sense of light-hearted swing made Blossom Dearie one of the most pleasant singers of the vocal era. Her tenderness and glisten ensured that she'd never treat standards as the well-worn songs they often appeared in less competent hands. And though her reputation was made on record with a string of excellent albums for Verve during the '50s, she remained a draw with Manhattan cabaret audiences long into the new millennium.

Self-avowed amateur musician Kevin Ayers left Soft Machine because they were too advanced for him. His claim disavowing pop music ran contrary to wanting to make money, and his attitude about writing critical songs flew in the face of his theory that many musical judgments are generally negative. The ultimate flip-flopper beyond the pale of many politicians, Ayers was admittedly a lazy drunk whose disdain for learning technique branded him not only an anomaly, but in many circles charming via an idiot savant persona.
