When Milcho Leviev left Bulgaria, it was 1970. A new generation has grown up since. Can you possibly imagine how much music has flowed under his fingers since then, how many concerts, records, arrangements and compositions he has done. And all these have been beyond reach in his native country, his music was arrested and silent. It was yet another enormity of a society the memory of which will still be haunting our dreams for years to come. Yet, in spite of everything, of the distance and the impossibility of normal communication, Milcho Leviev's influence on the development of Bulgarian jazz did not decrease. His ideas in the 60's were the basis for almost all young musicians to set forth on their way.

If ever there were a popular work of minimalism, one that stated its purpose so clearly it could not be mistaken, Terry Riley's legendary composition In C is the one. It is a work that needs no explanation for its pulsing sequences of pitch all centering around the 53 phases of no duration played on the note and its performances have been numerous–even if there have been relatively few recordings of it. The Bang on a Can all-stars have recorded perhaps the most innovative version of the work thus far, after Riley's own, which was issued in the 1960s on Columbia's long defunct Odyssey label.

Before Milt Jackson, there were only two major vibraphonists: Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo. Jackson soon surpassed both of them in significance and, despite the rise of other players (including Bobby Hutcherson and Gary Burton), still won the popularity polls throughout the decades. Jackson (or "Bags" as he was long called) was at the top of his field for 50 years, playing bop, blues, and ballads with equal skill and sensitivity.

Originating from a Japanese concert, this CD from M-A teams together pianist Milcho Leviev in duets with superb bassist Dave Holland. The music ranges from variations of standards to more introspective interplay and stimulating originals by the duo. High points include versions of Leviev's "Up and Down" and Holland's challenging and rather exciting "Jumpin' In." Although the bassist has a fair share of solo space, Leviev's command of the keyboard constantly grabs one's attention; he has long been one of Los Angeles' unheralded treasures. This recommended disc concludes (as do all of M-A's discs) with a selection taken from another CD, a fine performance by pianist Todd Garfinkle.

Blue Blud achieve to combine the big hair metal sound of the 80’s with some more melodic AOR stuff. Some really catchy and anthemic songs are clearly showing that this band could be huge back then.
