The delicacy of many ECM recordings can be measured via degrees, but in the case of the music conceived by pianist Stefano Bollani, those increments of hushed tones are micro dynamic, rendered as quintessentially subdued. Within a typically formatted piano-bass-drums trio, Bollani alongside bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Morten Lund can be described favorably as a cut below most groups of this type in terms of a sonic footprint. While Tord Gustavsen, Esbjorn Svensson, or Bobo Stenson may approach the similarly softer side of contemporary Continental jazz, Bollani has them covered in his utterly subtle approach, while still grasping an elusive, haunting quality to melody-making.

After their initial solo album without Herbie Hancock the Headhunters did two more albums with him on 1975's Man-Child and 1976's Secrets. Both of these records found the band and Herbie branching out into a more arranged,cinematic and gradually more melodically pop type approach to their funk. The jazz element still remained. Gradually different members would splinter of. And on this album,recorded a year after Herbie's last release it would be the final time the Headhunters would record together until the mid 1990's. Featuring the same lineup as before,only minus Baba Duru and plus side members Paul Poyten and Derrick Youman,they made this at a time when music all over the spectrum was different. Their was a very dance oriented musical ethic in the air. The disco scene was part of it. But it had a strong impact even on jazz funk as well.

The present release is the second solo album of the young German guitarist Elise Neumann. She chose to combine two seemingly different composers on this album: J.S. Bach and Mario Castelnuevo-Tedesco. While at first one might have difficulty drawing a connection between the two composers, they are alike in their compositional forms. Like J.S. Bach, Castelnuevo-Tedesco wrote music in the form of the suite, but his musical ideas are completely different. Elise Neumann plays with her acclaimed warm and soulful tone on a rare instrument built by the luthier Daniel Friederich in 1969. On this recording, instrument and player form a perfect team, establishing a most natural, effortless and deeply musical interpretation of these well-known works.

Dejan Lazić has long been interested in the art of the transcription, and here his program is built around the piano concerto that Beethoven fashioned from his own Violin Concerto. Lazić gives a fine performance: Trim and punchy, it sits well under his fingers. It was created for London-based Muzio Clementi, pianist and publisher, whose imposing B-minor Sonata makes an apt companion. As does the third panel of this triptych, the Sonata written by Johann Baptiste Cramer, a musician admired by Beethoven and who also settled in London. His dramatic sonata “Le Retour à Londres” is thrillingly played here.

Graham Ross concludes his exploration of music for the liturgical calendar with a programme focusing on the Holy Trinity, as reflected in music of the Russian and British traditions. From the works of the New Russian Choral School led by Tchaikovsky to more modern pieces such as those of Britten, with excursions into the Renaissance and contemporary creation, Graham Ross skilfully brings out the multiple correspondences between the choral traditions that have become established over the centuries around the mystery of the Trinity.

Wolfgang Voigt's music as Gas is about nostalgia and childhood, based on his memories of wandering the forests around Cologne. Built around a deep, steady thrum and orchestral samples, the music has a soft, cocooned feel to it, as if enclosed by coniferous trees and mossy ground. When Voigt revived the project with last year's Narkopop, the idea was the same, but the delivery was different: the music felt darker, and some fencing could be seen on the cover's otherwise natural landscape. It was meant to show, perhaps, man beginning to impose on the sanctity of the forest. The album reflected a kind of lost innocence…

The Munich Philharmonic has arguably given more performances of Anton Bruckner’s music than any other orchestra. 1967 - what a wonderful year! It heralded the Summer of Love when hippies roamed the streets of London clad in kaftans and beads and Flower Power ruled. It was also a year of artistic development when the Yardbirds became an important part of the coming rock revolution.

1966 was an exciting year for The Yardbirds, when the group was pulsing with ideas and energy.With singer and harmonica player Keith Relf at the helm and Jeff Beck providing guitar wizardry at his side, the group were on fire. They had released seminal studio album The Yardbirds, better known as Roger The Engineer, that featured Jeff on songs like Over, Under, Sideways, Down . However, it was on the road that the group, with Chris Dreja on bass and Jim McCarty on drums, really came alive. We hear them in action on the many dynamic live performances presented on this superb vinyl LP, storming into classics like Train Kept A Rollin and Shapes of Things to screams of applause. There are also fascinating oddities like American radio Commercials, as well as the A and B sides of singles and even Stroll On from the soundtrack of the famed Sixties movie Blow-Up. Here is a feast of Yardbirds in flight,that will delight collectors and fans alike.
