The first complete recording of the Breitkopf Urtext Edition of the organ concertos of George Frideric Handel. Handel's organ concertos enjoy a wide popularity, they are brilliant concert pieces, in which the organ plays a joyous, "worldly" part. Christian Schmitt is one of the most promising young organists in Germany, having won several international competitions. A welcome debut on Brilliant Classics of the famous Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, who play with great clarity and lively articulation, under the baton of Nicol Matt.

Fresh off his monumental work on Steely Dan's Gaucho, Steve went into the studio and cut these fabulous tracks. The three-piece really works, and Ron Carter on bass is exceptional. But it's Khan that really shines – his creative guitar interpretation of Monk's original angular piano sound makes for heavenly listening, awash with texture, color, and personality.

Even though the revival of Carl Nielsen's music in the late '60s proved to be nearly as revelatory as the slightly earlier promotion of Gustav Mahler's symphonies, the pace of recordings at the time was quite sluggish. Indeed, by the early '70s, the discography of Nielsen's symphonies included a smattering of releases by Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Ormandy for Columbia, Jascha Horenstein on Nonesuch, and Ole Schmidt on Unicorn, along with these utterly superior recordings by Herbert Blomstedt and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra for EMI. The six symphonies were recorded between 1973 and 1975, and for their time were the best available recordings of Nielsen's music.

The first quartet features Jan Hammer again along with George Benson and Paul Jackson on two songs. The second quartet has veterans Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and Tom Scott also for two songs.

Unlike many budget compilations that offer only selected movements or brief excerpts, Decca's Ultimate Piano Concertos: The Essential Masterpieces presents 10 masterworks in their entirety on five CDs, giving concerto fans a satisfying listening experience. Granted, these reissues are not audiophile recordings, nor are the performers familiar in every case; but for analog recordings from the 1950s to the 1970s, and digital recordings from the 1980s, the sound is quite good, and the performers are never less than fine, though in many instances, they are indeed exceptional. These concertos are at the top of most virtuoso pianists' lists, and though fashions change, all of these concertos have staying power and are regularly played in competitions around the world.

Building a basic collection of the masterpieces of Felix Mendelssohn just got easier with the release of this five-disc compendium from Decca, and some listeners may feel quite satisfied with the selections offered here, since they are representative of the composer's best instrumental and orchestral music. Two of Mendelssohn's most buoyant works appear on the first disc, the Symphony No. 3 in A minor, "Scottish," and the Symphony No. 4 in A major, "Italian," and receive engaging performances by Herbert Blomstedt and the San Francisco Symphony. The second disc presents the perennially popular Violin Concerto in E minor and the string orchestra version of the Octet in E flat major, performances featuring the versatile Pinchas Zukerman as violin soloist…

Badlands' long lost, third and final album, Dusk isn't really an album at all, but a batch of demos recorded between 1991 and 1992 for the group's then label, Atlantic, which first rejected them, then dropped the band, already mired in personal strife since the troubled sessions for their commercially disappointing second album, Voodoo Highway…

This album, issued in the wake of the stir caused by the Young Lions compilation album on Elektra Musician, is a first-rate mix of originals and standards beautifully executed by a group of studio players who include brothers Robin Eubanks on trombone, Charles on acoustic piano, and David on bass along with tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore and drummer Ronnie Burrage. Eubanks' choice of covers is brave; from Thelonious Monk's "Evidence" and Miles Davis' "Blue in Green" to Wes Montgomery's "The Thumb" and Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays," he offers not only chops, but a keen ear for nuance and subtlety. The treatment of Monk's "Evidence" is particularly satisfying for retaining the pianist/composer's angles without sacrificing the swing quotient.

In music and the world at large, and especially here in Canada, the year 1967 has a special resonance. At home the country was celebrating its 100th birthday, a young and charismatic Pierre Trudeau was on his way to changing Canada’s political landscape while his hometown Montreal attracted the world’s attention with the hugely popular and exuberant Expo ’67 World’s Fair. Excited and exciting, to say that Canada was rockin’ in 1967 would be an understatement, a young country just coming into its own.
