    The Master and the Musician is the title of the first entirely instrumental album by guitarist Phil Keaggy, released in 1978, on NewSong Records. It was later reissued, with a bonus track, on Myrrh Records in 1989. Phil Keaggy's first instrumental album is a groundbreaking piece of work for him as an artist, for the Christian music genre, and for instrumental guitar music in general. Full of emotional twists, meditative sounds, and world-influenced tonalities, The Master & the Musician stands as an oasis in an otherwise barren field of Christian instrumental music. Pieces like "Jungle Pleasures" and "Follow Me Up" are great works in their own right, Christian or otherwise. An excellent work from an excellent musician.

    Stefano Battaglia plays both piano and prepared piano (sometimes simultaneously) in a highly attractive double-album programme that includes his own compositions and spontaneous improvisations as well as two versions of the Arabic traditional song “Lamma Bada Yatathanna”. The melodic and texturally-inventive pieces, some of almost hypnotic allure, were recorded both in concert and in “closed doors” sessions at the Fazoli Concert Hall in Sacile, Italy, in May 2016, and subsequently arranged into what Battaglia describes as “a wonderful new shape with a completely new dramaturgy” by producer Manfred Eicher.

    The players varied the sound and delivery of each piece as suited the music and the mood, making for a lively program entirely lacking in dull spots: a great idea for an audience that’s showed up expecting some fun. Which they got. The playing was crisp, tight, harmonious, and, well, really brassy. Burning River is clearly an ensemble that enjoys its work. Its easy, punchy delivery, which seems unforced and effortless, could only have turned out that way with a significant amount of practice and great attention to detail… this Christmas Concert was about as good as it gets.

    The genesis of Rossinis first full-scale opera Demetrio e Polibio is shrouded in speculation, but its initial intention as a family opera for the tenor Domenico Mombelli, with roles for his daughters and a libretto by his wife seems clear.
