Swedish multi-reed artist Mats Gustafsson was just beginning to come into his own at the time of this recording. The oddly titled Mouth Eating Trees and Related Activities catches him at the cusp when his prodigious technical abilities were starting to be subsumed into an impressive musical presence. It doesn't hurt that his companions for this freely improvised session are stalwarts like Barry Guy and Paul Lovens, who provide accompaniment that's creatively telepathic.

Jerry Goldsmith’s 1993 score for Twentieth Century-Fox’s remake of The Vanishing was one of the composer’s very rare ‘90s scores to go without an album release. Goldsmith’s score is both intense and beautiful, while steeped in psychological intrigue. It is stylistically similar to the composer’s brilliant work on Basic Instinct but is as unique as ever for Goldsmith and includes a rare exploration in jazz as the composer wraps up his score with a jazz trio. GoldsmithIn this riveting, tension-filled psychological thriller, a young woman (Sandra Bullock) mysteriously disappears, sending her boyfriend, Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland), on a years-long quest to find her. Not even a new love (Nancy Travis) can keep him from his obsessive search. All the while, the calculating psychopath (Jeff Bridges) who kidnapped his girlfriend stalks Jeff, ultimately taking him through the exact same steps that led to the crime. In order to find out what happened, Jeff must put his own life in the hands of this devious stranger.

A strong friendship can be a wonderful thing, a connection that allows you to pick up where you left off no matter how long the gap, one that remains strong whatever your respective experiences since you last met. Should you and your friends happen to be professional musicians then that gift can potentially go to a whole new higher level. Israeli trio Shalosh met in High School and their friendship endured even pianist Gadi Stern's six year exile in the USA.

In the current program, Tsching is emerging from any stylistic drawers and devotes itself entirely to its own creative roots and influences. At the same time, the three musicians draw all the stops with a new instrumentation of the pieces. Instead of looking for the most beautiful sounds and inspiration all over the world, Tsching, with his "pocket anthems", recalls his very individual artistic background.

The main question here is how BMG's new 20-bit remasterings compare to those in their 1990 Toscanini Complete Edition. Both ends of the dynamic spectrum are considerbly opened up, which intensify the Maestro's stinging accents and point up the carefully sculpted cantabile phrasings to an unprecedented degree. I also detect smidgens of artificial reverberation: tastefully applied, but frankly superfluous.

Trey Anastasio's The Horseshoe Curve is a collection of cuts taken off the shelf as a stopgap between the guitarist's "real" albums – at release time, Anastasio was in the fourth month of a court-ordered yearlong drug rehab program. It's too bad in a sense, because it's such a dazzling recording, taken from a period between 2002-2004 when he was touring and recording with this woolly mammoth of a band; it's also far above the level of the two recordings he released during that period: Shine (2005) and Bar 17 (2006).

Saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum gathered together a new version of his Hieroglyphics for this record date, inspired by rediscovering fragments of music left over from the 1970s. Influenced strongly not only by avant-garde jazz but world music, the Hieroglyphics are, at times, reminiscent of Abdullah Ibrahim's groups, open to the rhythms, harmonies, and melodies of American, Latin, European, African, and Asian music. While the band has a strong group sound, Apfelbaum's nine originals cover a wide variety of music including the vocal-dominated "Titiwa" (featuring Abdoulaye Diabate), a number showcasing the leader on harmonium, some ensemble-oriented pieces, and others with short and fiery solos. Although not for the jazz purist, there is plenty of spirit to these performances, serving as an opportunity for Peter Apfelbaum to look both backwards and forward simultaneously.

In recent years, Western artists such as Corey Harris and Markus James have traveled to the West African nation of Mali to make records, and Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, Robert Plant, and Taj Mahal are among those who've collaborated with Malian musicians or at least been fascinated and influenced by Mali's role as a source of the blues.

Bobby Troup has long been a multi-talented individual. This Star Line CD, which contains previously unissued performances from several settings, features Troup singing and playing a variety of high-quality songs, many of which he wrote. Highlights include Troup's lyrics to "Walkin' Shoes" and his hits "Daddy," "The Three Bears," "Girl Talk," and "Route 66," along with some cheerful novelties and standards. Singing in a style that is both gentle and forceful (and somehow hip for the period without sounding dated), Bobby Troup is in excellent form throughout this definitive release.
