During the hair-today-gone-tomorrow eighties party, Hollywood heavy-on-image rock groups were a dime-a-dozen. Every label scrambled to sign what they thought would take-off like the next Guns N' Roses…

Blues | Country: USA | Label: Warehouse Creek (WCRC1224)

Fans of the pre-eminent New Orleans electric guitarist of the '40s and '50s should make note of the "Junior" appendage to that name. This is not Eddie Jones, the original Guitar Slim, but his son, Rodney Armstrong, born in New Orleans in 1951. Although Armstrong didn't grow up with his father, who died in 1959, he seems to absorbed a good amount of his style, along with the rougher-edged playing of Chicago-style guitar masters like Albert and Freddie King. This 1996 release is a live-in-the-studio session featuring the Memphis Horns. Armstrong's playing is fiery throughout, but with a sweetness of tone in songs like "Oo Wee Baby I Love You" and a take on the Otis Redding arrangement of the standard "Try A Little Tenderness" that's reminiscent of his father.

Nice & Strong finds Paul deLay at the top of his form, turning out a set of hard-driving Chicago-style blues. Not only does deLay sound tougher than ever, his songs are simply stunning, displaying a devilish humor and a new vulnerability. It's another winning record from one of the great contemporary blues musicians and harp players of the '90s.

    Blues | Country: USA | Label: M.C. RECORDS (MC0035)

For All the Way Back, Big Jack Johnson decided to tame the instinct for social commentary and concentrate on what his audience loves: hard-hitting, electrified Delta blues. The result is a monster of a record, filled with great songs and unbridled, earth-shaking playing from Johnson. The key to his music is that he knows how to write a great song, one that adheres to blues traditions without being a slave to them. The funk and soul flourishes he brings to the blues don't compromise the form but bring it into fresh new territory, and this is what makes All the Way Back such a terrific listen.

Every now and then, you run across someone with a library’s worth of stories to tell. But unlike the raconteurs who regale friends with well-embellished versions of their exploits, these storytellers have lived so much, they reveal chapters of their hard-won wisdom slowly, carefully, like layers peeled from an onion. Ray Bonneville didn’t even open his storybook until his early 40s, some 20 years after he started performing. But with a style that sometimes draws comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois, this blues-influenced, New Orleans-inspired “song and groove man,” as he’s been so aptly described, luckily found his rightful calling.

Already a Chicago blues institution for over a quarter century, Vance Kelly finally began raising his international profile during the mid-1990s. Born January 24, 1954, he began making waves on the South Side club circuit while still a teenager, performing both as a solo artist and as a sideman; over time he developed a ringing guitar sound, and a 1987-1990 tenure as a member of A.C. Reed's Sparkplugs also profoundly influenced his supple vocal style.

Texas Blues | Country: USA | Label: Prestige Bluesville ‎– 7PCD-4406-2

This is a seven-CD box set that repackages all 11 LPs that Lightnin' Hopkins recorded for Bluesville and Prestige during the first half of the 1960s: Last Night Blues, Lightnin', Blues in My Bottle, Walkin' This Road By Myself, Lightnin' and Co., Smokes Like Lightning, Hootin' the Blues, Goin' Away, Down Home Blues, Soul Blues and My Life in the Blues. The very prolific Hopkins (who was never loyal to any one label) also recorded for Candid, Arhoolie, Fire and Vee Jay during the period! The bulk of My Life in the Blues is actually a lengthy and rather historic interview that Samuel Charters conducted with Hopkins. A special bonus of the set is 13 often exciting tracks from a previously unissued concert at the Swarthmore College Folk Festival. The music throughout the box covers quite a variety of moods and subject matter (with Hopkins being unaccompanied on 34 of the tracks) and definitively sums up the veteran bluesman's later period.

Once again, attention is paid to the 'flow' of the 15 gems chosen here from shuffling beats to boogie to more soulful house as played at modern soul events.

Very few women seem to play bass, but Queen Sylvia Embry was a fine player who impressed Willie Dixon so much he sent her to Europe to play on the American Blues Festival tours. She also had an expressive, deep-toned Gospel voice that made her a hit on the Chicago club circuit, and was even more to the fore when she led her own band.

The latest Cubenx album entilted Fractal City is a collection of terrestrial jams and arachnean ambient ballads that are particularly apt for urban listening. Recorded live on a single track over a short period of a few weeks, the nine compositions of Fractal City capture the obsessions of its author for postmodern urban landscapes, and the revelation of new perspectives on the city of Paris.
