US band Castle Canyon started out in 1973. Friends from Portland, Oregon that had a shared fascination for shroom hunting and weird music. They wrote a handful or so of tunes back then, but their local environment wasn't the best to pursue music outside of the mainstream format, and life and circumstance saw to it that the band fell apart sometime around 1975…

Great instruments have always been associated with great musicians, and this is true in the guitar world too, at least from the early 19th century onwards. Early in his career, Antonio de Torres (1817-1892), like other luthiers before him, found a performer ideally suited to his instruments – the young Andalusian guitarist Julián Arcas. The technical innovations in construction and timbre pioneered by Torres enabled Arcas to give full expression to his artistry in works such as the florid Fantasía sobre El paño o sea Punto de La Habana with which Luigi Attademo opens this new studio album.

His program, selected as much for its variety as for the smooth tonal transitions between each piece, is a work of art in itself. Gregorian chant opens and closes the day, while Schumann gently moves us into light with his introspective but radiant “Gesänge der Frühe.” Music by Beethoven, Debussy, Scriabin, Liszt, Thomas Adès—plus Bartók’s unnerving portrait of nighttime (“The Night’s music”) and an exciting world premiere recording of Matthias Pintscher’s “Whirling tissue of light”—provide fascinating individual interpretations of different times of day. Each is played with clarity, sensitivity, and a beautiful sense of narrative.

He’s been hailed “The Voice Of Rock”, and for good reason, as this 7 CD live box set ably testifies. With vocals soaked in blues and soul, Glenn Hughes has played with and fronted many legends of rock, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes-Thrall, Trapeze and Black Country Communion.

A ‘Complete Albums Collection’ box set of Canadian-American rock band Buffalo Springfield output will be released on vinyl and CD at the end of June. Although the band, which featured Neil Young and Stephen Stills, only issued three studio albums, the Complete Albums Collection will be a five-disc set since it includes 1966’s self-titled debut in both stereo and the band-preferred dedicated mono mix (which Young and Stills insisted on, after disliking the original stereo mix). The follow-up – 1967’s Buffalo Springfield Again – is also included in both dedicated mono and stereo. 1968’s Last Time Around (stereo only) completes this box.

Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger (19 March 1873 – 11 May 1916), commonly known as Max Reger, was a German composer, pianist, organist, conductor, and academic teacher. He worked as a concert pianist, as a musical director at the Leipzig University Church, as a professor at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, and as a music director at the court of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. Reger first composed mainly Lieder, chamber music, choral music and works for piano and organ. He later turned to orchestral compositions, such as the popular Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart, and to works for choir and orchestra such as Gesang der Verklärten (1903), Der 100. Psalm (1909), Der Einsiedler and the Hebbel Requiem (both 1915).

The combination of Damian Wilson and Adam Wakeman has never disappointed and this eloquent album continues that trend. Key to their artistic success is an understanding of songwriting and a defiant resistance against overplaying. Instead, the songs collected here are raw and direct, with the arrangements deliberately restrained and infused with a simple beauty. Laugh In Time is a seductive ballad that’s reminiscent of Cat Stevens at his finest, and the darkly amusing Blackpool Clip Joint Racket possesses the grandeur of early Billy Joel. Indeed, throughout The Sun Will Dance In Its Twilight Hour, there’s a rare consistency to the music, which mixes a contemporary approach with early-70s concise inspiration. Opener The Last American Hero, with an impossibly catchy chorus, is an upbeat tale of an airman and astronaut, and On This Battlefield is similarly direct. The inclusion of Travis guitarist Andy Dunlop alongside seductive strings only enhances the appeal. Impeccably pitched and performed, it’s an album with the potential – given the right exposure – to cross over to mass public appeal.
