    Black Metal

IMMORTAL’s new album is a blizzard agitating the very foundations of black metal. With rabid furore, teeth-baring aggression and an eerie cold that crawls deep into the very bones of the listener after only a few unrelenting seconds, Immortal have erected a new superior kingdom of frost on top of their existing legacy. »Northern Chaos Gods«, consequently, is the very essence of IMMORTAL; a distillate of grimness that will once again heave the band onto the ice throne of Norwegian black metal.

Time Life's "The First 50 Years" is a triple-disc box set where each disc is built around a specific theme: "Duets," "Story Songs", and "Love Songs." These themes are a new, easy way to recycle the same hits that appear on every Kenny Rogers collection like clockwork, but it's an effective move, resulting in an enjoyable collection of the original hit recordings where the enticement is a brand new recording added to each themed disc. Perhaps it's not much of a bait to the hardcore fans, but they're not really the audience for this: The First 50 Years is for anybody who wants all of Kenny's hits but never has bothered to pick them up. Now they have another chance.

If anything, CCR's third album Green River represents the full flower of their classic sound initially essayed on its predecessor, Bayou Country. One of the differences between the two albums is that Green River is tighter, with none of the five-minute-plus jams that filled out both their debut and Bayou Country, but the true key to its success is a peak in John Fogerty's creativity…

Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt were at the forefront of the early music movement that swept classical music in the ’70s and ’80s, performing pieces from the canon with period instruments in order to re-create the original intent of the composer as closely as possible. And their most enduring legacy is right here, the complete survey of Bach’s sacred cantatas that they began in 1971 and completed in 1988. This body of work has served as a beacon for younger musicians seeking a fuller understanding of Bach’s work, and will forever be regarded as one of the pioneering projects in the history of recording classical music. 60 CDs in all.
