Many seem compelled to call The Antichrist the 'comeback' album for Destruction, but this not chronologically nor logically the case. The sound here is one lifted straight from its predecessor, All Hell Breaks Loose, but pummeled into perfection…

Cause for Conflict may just qualify as the most confused and perplexing album of Kreator's long career – it's certainly one of the least popular. The band's previous effort, 1992's industrial-tinged Renewal, had not been well-received by the majority of fans and critics, and its mixed fortunes also led to serious dissent within the group's ranks, culminating in the departure of bassist Rob Fioretti and drummer Jürgen "Ventor" Reil – both of whom had been with the band almost since its inception. Reeling from this development, as well as heavy metal's general unpopularity at the time, three years would pass before Kreator main man Mille Petrozza found it in himself to make another go of it…

An off-kilter, bone dry western twang informs the loose experimentalism of black (w)hole’s heady journey of “altered states”. Perfectly named, the songs pass by as if in a delirious haze. Keeping things relatively loose the entirety of the album works best when taken in as a singular unified whole. Buildup has a post-rock quality to it for their usage of distortion and feedback gives it a particular edge. The way the music waits for things to unfurl and gradually collapse adds to the unique sense of the dramatic that comes to frame the entirety of the album. Layer upon layer comes into the mix, with guitars getting gnarled into the wild, weird and wonderful riffs that serve as the anchor of everything.

It was the awakening (Despertando) of a tinge of longing which inspired Diego Pinera to record this album. More than seventeen years after having left his native Uruguay, he re-visits his roots, the influences which first left their mark on him, and the legacy which made him the musician he is today. His choice of compositions is highly personal: tunes by Gato Barbieri and Ernesto Lecuona are clear cultural references to Argentina and Cuba (Pinera also studied in Havana). His own composition “Osvaldo por Nueve” is a homage to his first teacher and mentor Osvaldo Fattoruso. It is also Pinera’s modern take on the ‘candombe’ folklore tradition, popular in Uruguay. The track “Yakarito Terere” is personal too: a composition by his father, inspired by a memory from childhood, of regular excursions into the hinterland of Montevideo.Pinera’s en…

German act ARGOS initially started out as a solo project by multi-instrumentalist and composer Thomas Klarmann, an experienced musician who started out in prog and fusion bands in the 70's. He abandoned the progressive part of the music scene more and more as time went by though, concentrating on jazz, but when he discovered the new progressive movement in the mid 90's spearheaded by acts like Flower Kings and Spock's Beard, the passion for making and performing progressive music returned as well.

The outstanding production of Verdi’s Masked Ball at the Salzburg Festivals 1989 and 1990 was Herbert von Karajan’s legacy to the Festival. Supported by a cast of superlative actor-singers in opulent scenery, Sir George Solti agreed to conduct the opera at short notice after Karajan’s unexpected death in 1989. The production had been expected to be a highlight in Karajan’s series of Verdi operas at Salzburg. Karajan’s celebrated ability to unite a cultivated sound with dramatic effects was known to create extraordinary and highly acclaimed opera events. For Un ballo in maschera Karajan planned something unusual: He would not set the opera in colonial Massachusetts, as the censors had forced Verdi to do when he was composing the work, but in Stockholm in the 1790s at the court of King Gustav III of Sweden, as Verdi had originally conceived his work. Together with the film director John Schlesinger and his stage team, Karajan developed a concept that promised theatrical splendour equal to the musical excellence that the conductor and the handpicked cast of singers would surely provide in collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

The album starts with a peaceful and melodic ballad ending with an ambient passage. The second song starts with the same ending of the first song and in the same mood, before an explosion of guitars in the progressive metal style, and it all comes down with a delicate touch of piano and some acoustic guitar. The vocals of Yenz Strurz are familiar and enjoyable, you will surely find a reference with many singers in the Neo-Prog world. The keyboards of Frank Kohler doesn't deceive with some beautiful melodies.

Our Solar System's third full-length via Beyond Beyond is Beyond is perhaps their most transparent and revealing, unobstructed by anything beyond the group's now-masterful commitment to eclipsing the expected. On Origins, the music is at once rapturous, intense and mysterious. The opening half of Side A Vulkanen offers an almost animal assessment of the power possessed by Our Solar System. With considerable ambience the opening suite finds its balance in a land with similar topographic features to that explored by Cluster, Harmonia or Fly United-era Amon Duul II (and with no skimping on the flute here, either). Side B is the slightly more serene of Origins' offerings, though not a gram less compelling.

The band's first self-recorded/produced album was released on November 8th of 2013 and rapidly reached many like-minded souls. This translated into tens of thousands full album streams on Youtube. The album was adequately named 'ATMOSPHERES' and distinguished itself from the start with its polyrhythmic grooves drenched in dreamlike melodies.

This is the second album from Tumbletown, a band made up of some musicians I am sure that many progheads will be familiar with. I remember Egdon Heath from their second album, 1991's 'The Killing Silence, and guitarist/bassist Aldo Adema was involved with that band for many years while keyboard player Erik Laan is from the mighty Silhouette and singer/guitarist Han Uil was with Aldo in Seven Day Hunt. The line-up is completed by drummer Arjan Laan. Musically this is crossover prog, and I can't work out if I keep being reminded of Roxy Music during 'Avalon' due to their classic song of the same name, of if there really are similarities during the chorus. The rest of the time they are nothing like Roxy, as they move through many different styles of progressive music from prog metal through symphonic and others, but always melodic and interesting.
