Paying tribute to the people and places that have collectively attributed to Bassist Jake Leckie s identity, the compositions heard on his debut album, The Abode, evoke a true sense of place. This music is a meditation on migration, understanding, and empathy. With an organic compositional approach, and an interactive group improvisational style, Leckie creates acoustic music that is elevated, while simultaneously burrowing a deep engagement with his audience.

An easy-to-listen, straightforward, slightly updated swing music is the result of the meeting between Ekestubb's trio and Toresson. You tear off nine evergreens that are played straight on, without adding anything more personally that stands out. Toresson plays cool and controlled with nice tone, where Stan Getz may have been the inspiration. In the title song Where Or When, he is laid back and relaxed emotionally as a Lester Young.

Keine Pascow Platte zuvor war inhaltlich so greifbar, fokussiert und auf den Punkt. Hier verlässt die Band ein Genre, das sie in den letzten Jahren selbst mitgeprägt hatte. Und so passieren fünf Jahre nach ihrem letzten Longplayer „Diene der Party“ auf „Jade“ Dinge, die wohl genau diese Zeit gebraucht haben.
Das Album wurde in drei Wochen Studiozeit zusammen mit Kurt Ebelhäuser produziert und die Haltung und Energie der Band hört man der Platte in jedem Moment an. Pascow haben ihren eigenen Sound weiter ausgearbeitet und bei Tracks wie „Silberblick und Scherenhände“ (übrigens auch die erste Single), „Unter Geiern“, „Treck der Toten“ oder „Sturm, der durch Erlen zieht“ ist nach wenigen Riffs eindeutig klar, wen wir hören. Und dann gibt es da die Überraschungen, die Songs, in denen man die pure Spielfreude und den eigensinnigen Humor der Band spürt („Die Backenzähne des Teufels“) oder in persönliche Gefilde mitgenommen wird, die Pascow in dieser Form noch nicht preisgegeben haben, wie in „Schmutzigrot“ oder „Wunderkind“.

Ultimately, what makes a voice appealing is not just skill and the ability to communicate but cadence and timbre. A voice that is technically pristine can also be hollow, while character idiosyncrasies might please. Beverley Church Hogan has a seasoned voice. It’s just chesty enough to add a pinch more emotion and affect between the lines. Low notes palpably breathe. Almost everything arrives round-edged. She sounds honest.

The prospect of a little-known Saint-Saëns orchestral work might not set the heart racing, but just wait until you hear ‘La foi’. Ample amends for a century’s unaccountable neglect are made with this magnificent new recording—so much more than a prelude to the ‘organ’ symphony.
