    In 2018, Spidergawd vanished from the surface, but not to rest. Rather the opposite. On the 11th January they are back with their fifth studio album, not surprisingly titled ‘Spidergawd V’. Once again the band mates Rolf Martin Snustad (baritone sax) Hallvard Gaardløs (bass) Kenneth Kapstad (drums) and Per Borten (guitar/vocals) have managed to make an impressive album in their own unique sound. Whereas Spidergawd I and II were documentations on an adult musical playground, Spidergawd III and IV headed the band towards a more serious and defined identity.

    I'm really enjoying this album, featuring Chicago Jazz vocalist Stephanie Browning and Dean Jensen (former member of Robert Fripp's league of crafty guitarists). It's got a great 1970's/early 80's Pop/Rock/Metal tone to it. Songs like Antimony jar with time signatures that remind me of Three of a Perfect Pair era King Crimson. On songs like Dread and Canyon some of Browning's soaring vocals at first put me a bit in mind of Chelsea Wolfe as they coast over crashing power chords while singing of doom, but really her vocals are more pure classic rock, akin to a Linda Rondstat or Ann Wilson in the way they cleanly cut through feedback and guitar solos. Really tuneful and enjoyable (and at times LOUD).

    Here at Tuff Kong Records we really like to push our boundaries and explore different sounds, we're passionate with music at 360° and so are these guys we have decided to bring to your attention. Dumbo Station is a nu-jazz ensemble out of Roma, Italy that we've met during a live jam with legendary MC Danno of historical roman hip-hop group Colle Der Fomento. They immediately caught our attention and after listening to this masterpiece we decided to collaborate with them and Roman jazz imprint AlfaMusic to release their debut full-length "Tirana Cafè" on limited edition vinyl. The 11 songs featured on their first studio effort will take you on a trip through different soundscapes with the quartet as your guide, joined by Italian talents the such as vocalist Davide Shorty as well as Maurizio Giammarco's sax and Elvio Ghigliordini's flute. These young fellas have managed to merge nu-jazz with soul, funk and modern sounds creating a true masterpiece.

    Issue d'une famille bourgeoise et conservatrice, elle reçoit une éducation stricte avec cours de piano. Aînée de cinq enfants, elle devra montrer l'exemple. La guerre survient lorsqu'elle n'est qu'une jeune fille, mais déjà le spectacle l'intéresse. Elle écoute beaucoup de disques, Léo Marjane et Jean Sablon sont ses idoles. Pendant les années sombres de l'occupation, elle fait de la figuration au cinéma. Elle chante aussi, mais uniquement dans le cadre familial. Ce n'est qu'après la Libération qu'elle décide de se lancer dans la chanson. Le climat de l'époque s'y prête, les Parisiens ont envie de se distraire après toutes les privations de la guerre. Si bien que Jacqueline, qui a choisi « François » comme nom de scène, ne connait guère le chômage. Les maisons de disques mettent pourtant du temps avant de s'intéresser à elle.

    Pianist/composer Duke Pearson leads an all-star group on this run-through of seven of his compositions. The musicians (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, altoist James Spaulding, Joe Henderson on tenor, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Mickey Roker, and the pianist/leader) are actually more impressive than many of the compositions, although the swinging minor-toned "Big Bertha" deserved to become a standard. The frameworks are quite intelligent (and everyone doesn't solo on each selection), and the improvisations are concise and clearly related to each tune's melody and mood.

    Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album for Stephanie Soechtig’s documentary The Devil We Know. The album features the film’s original music composed and conducted by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast & Furious, Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me) who previously scored Soechtig’s Under the Gun. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. The Devil We Know centers on one of the biggest environmental scandals of our time, as a group of citizens in West Virginia take on a powerful corporation after they discover it has knowingly been dumping a toxic chemical into the local drinking water supply. The documentary premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is now available on VOD.

    "Taxi" is the 8th solo studio album by Bryan Ferry, the former lead vocalist for Roxy Music. The album was released on Virgin Records in April 1993, over five years after the release of his previous album "Bête Noire". This was Ferry's third solo album since the second demise of Roxy Music in 1983, ten years earlier. The album was a commercial and critical success, peaking at #2 in the U.K., it was certified Gold by the BPI. The first single, "I Put a Spell on You" was the album's only Top 20 hit in the U.K., peaking at #18. The second single, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" narrowly missed the U.K. Top 20, peaking at #23. The third and final single, "Girl Of My Best Friend" peaked at #57.

    When you start proclaiming that your music is ready made for those who "appreciate the music in the tradition of Weather Report, Return to Forever, The Dixie Dregs, Mahavishnu Orchestra, or Medeski, Martin, and Wood", well, you'd sure as hell better deliver the goods. The new release from instrumental fusion outfit Zed is called You Are Here, and contains nine tracks filled with plenty of groove, solo spots, and progressive arrangements. Problem is, I think by even mentioning some of those classic bands, the bar was perhaps set a little too high. Rarely does any of the interplay here come close to what we would expect from RTF, the Dregs, or Mahavishnu.

    After the broad success of “Bite My Blues”, Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel’s Berlin band Gorilla Mask is back with more music; not to cover the foot imprints of his previous work but going beyond a good number of steps. You can’t say anymore that this project consists of a mix of jazz with punk and metal – the kind of sonic assault heard on “Iron Lung” has an identity of its own, inclusively because it’s not only a projection of raw energy. There’s purpose, method and order in a unique way, even if the alto sax makes us think of an Arthur Blythe high on methamphetamines. Roland Fidezius’ and Rudi Fischerlehner’s repetitive patterns give focus to the overall chaos of dissonance, atonality, free flowing multiphonics and electric noise, turning this post-everything proposal into a wonder of sound sculpting and form made from debris: a divergent, deviant, subversive, perverse masterpiece which exposes the human face behind the gorilla mask.
