    One Thousand Violins were one of my favourite ever indie bands. Not a lot of people, however, saw them live, and success never greeted them overnight, so that they became 'NME' front page stars. 'Halcyon Days' covers everything the band recorded and officially released in their better original line-up, who were together between 1985 and 1988. They were fronted by the rather shy John Wood, which was something to be admired in that era when the Smiths were a top-selling act. He captured the words written by guitarist Colin Gregory and keyboardist Dave Walmsley (the latter of whom died of cancer in 1992), and sung in the style of Scott Walker, backed by a band which had elements of the the Smiths but added the psychedelia of Echo & The Bunnymen to the mix.

    Joseph-Hector Fiocco's music is remarkable for its quality, richness of invention and the liveliness that characterizes it all. With a somewhat surprising coherence it achieves a fusion of French and Italian aesthetics, as regards both harmony and melody. His infectious melodies give the listener the impression of knowing them already; singability is always paramount, and the lines are supple and elegant. Now and then a passage is reminiscent of Vivaldi, Pergolesi or Couperin. Yet the firm, inspired pen of Fiocco confirms his stature as a composer of the first order, with a highly personal language full of sensuality and light. Nicolas Achten and Scherzi Musicali deliver a second volume devoted to Fiocco's motets, after a 2011 release which was awarded a Diapason d'or Decouverte and IRR Outstanding.

    2002 album from Nik Bartsch's Ronin, released on the ECM Records star's own Ronin Rhythm label. The Swiss pianist/composer is famed for his "Zen Funk" sound, a "marriage of Steve Reich minimalism with Sly Stone grooves" (The Times).
    "Modul 15" plays with time in much the same way as "Modul 22" on REA, in that what we thought we were hearing rhythmically in the bass is subverted when the drums come in. The beat keeps being "turned around" as the two rhythms drift in and out of phase. Rast is a master at almost defining a steady meter/rhythm but not quite, as he mutates his patterns just enough to throw us off.
