In 1981, a lot of rock & rollers were claiming that the disco era was officially over. Disco, of course, never really died – a lot of the dance-pop, house music, Hi-NRG, and Latin freestyle that was recorded in the '80s and '90s was essentially disco – but as far as many of the radio stations and record company A&R men of 1981 were concerned, disco was dead. And that was bad news for Chic, a group closely identified with the disco era. Even though a lot of Chic's work had as much to do with funk and soul as it did with the Euro-disco sound, Chic was unable to live down its reputation as a disco group. But Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards gave it a try with 1981's Take It Off, an admirable, if uneven, project that finds the group downplaying the Euro-disco elements.

CHIC's third album has been praised by many as their very finest, yet - perhaps because of the impossible task of surpassing two monster albums (C'est CHIC + We Are Family) - I feel this comes off a wee bit disappointing. Of course, there was the ambiguous "Good Times", possibly CHIC's very greatest track with Nard's classic bass line, this first single has made history of its own, and there's no denying the splendid quality of this record. "A Warm Summer Night" is a sensuous instrumental that belongs among my favourites with its corny "Te quiero papi" whisper. Needless to say, the music is faultlessly played, repeating the theme over and over again.

Master of the Art is the studio companion to the album Night Music, also reissued on Wounded Bird records from the original Elektra Musician masters, with the same band as on the live date, but with completely different songs and a short interview from the trumpeter. At a time when Shaw was one of the most consistently brilliant trumpeter's of the modern era, this effort did nothing to hurt that estimable reputation. Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and trombonist Steve Turre being on the front line made for an arresting sound, while the emerging pianist Mulgrew Miller was asserting himself as a major force, with drummer Stafford James and drummer Tony Reedus sounding like they had worked together for decades. The four tracks include here are quite lengthy, allowing for stretched melody lines and beefy solos, showing the inventiveness and stamina of this mighty sextet.

The Russian band Infront was formed back in 1999, initially after two kindred musical souls and planned a band formation and subsequent development next in line. In 2005 their debut album was issued by the Russian label RAIG, and in early 2011 their second disc, "Inescapable," was launched, this time through the Russian label MALS. If you like your instrumental progressive rock challenging and sophisticated, don't mind the odd progressive metal-oriented themes in between the Frippian art rock excursions, and you really enjoy music that is generally on the borderline of something or other, Infront is a band you should become more familiar with, in particular if you have a soft spot for refined, advanced instrumental music and the antics of those inspired by the likes of Robert Fripp.

When Tobias Haslinger published Franz Schubert's Schwanengesang, D 957 in 1829, he combined two sets of Lieder on texts by Ludwig Rellstab and Heinrich Heine, with Schubert's final song, Die Taubenpost, a setting of a poem by Johann Gabriel Seidl. This established the standard order for most performances of Schwanengesang, though for this 2015 BIS release, baritone James Rutherford and pianist Eugene Asti have included Herbst, D 945, a song composed in 1828 that is sometimes inserted in recitals.
