The group consists of three standouts from the Nordic region: pianist Samuli Mikkonen (Finland), bassist Anders Jormin (Sweden) and drummer Audun Kleive (Norway).

He has played with many jazz performers notably Jean-Luc Ponty, Michel Portal, Martial Solal, Dexter Gordon, Gerry Mulligan and Eric Dolphy. Humair is also a talented painter. Recorded in the mid-'90s, Mad Nomad(s) reaffirms Henri Texier's presence on the French scene. The playing and compositions are remarkable throughout and display a lot of variety, all the tunes being performed in various groupings but mainly by a septet with a strong and young saxophone front line. Texier's own "Dezarwa" is a tribute to drummer Art Taylor's own brand of hard bop. Drummer Tony Rabeson's "Radio Bo" is given a more relaxed and less-boppish treatment than on pianist Bojan Zulfikarpasic's Koreni. Homage is paid to free jazz with a powerful rendition of Ornette Coleman's "Happy House," a composition which finds a natural home on this work. And guitarist Noël Akchoté's explosive "Blasted Rats" echoes the leader's outcry.

Barney Jean Wilen was a French tenor and soprano saxophonist and jazz composer. Wilen was born in Nice; his father was an American dentist turned inventor, and his mother was French. He began performing in clubs in Nice after being encouraged by Blaise Cendrars who was a friend of his mother. His career was boosted in 1957 when he worked with Miles Davis on the soundtrack Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud. In 1959, Wilen wrote his two soundtracks Un Témoin Dans la Ville and Jazz sur scène with Kenny Clarke. He wrote a soundtrack for Roger Vadim's film Les Liaisons Dangeureuse two years later, working with Thelonious Monk. Wilen returned to composing for French films in the 1980s and 1990s. In the mid-to-late 1960s he became interested in rock, and recorded an album dedicated to Timothy Leary. Wilen toured in Japan for the first time in 1990. He also worked with punk rockers before returning to jazz in the 1990s. Wilen played with modern jazz musicians until his death in 1996. He died of cancer in Paris at the age 59.

British soul-jazz organist James Taylor has crossed easily between stylistic definitions throughout his career, from the hard-charging garage rock of the Prisoners to his pioneering acid jazz work of the '90s. As the title suggests, Picking Up Where We Left Off finds Taylor returning to a straight soul-jazz setup with a classic Hammond quartet lineup akin to the James Taylor Quartet but featuring new collaborators in guitarist Nigel Price, bassist Andy McKinney, and drummer Neil Robinson. Fresh blood aside, this is entirely familiar territory for Taylor, mixing funky, Jimmy Smith-inspired organ lines with shuffling beats and funk-influenced guitar. The closest thing to a departure is the ballad "Never in My Wildest Dreams," a lovely showcase for an extended George Benson-like solo by Price.

As Elliot Root began recording their first full-length album, Conjure, the Nashville foursome had the rare opportunity to figure out exactly what kind of band they wanted to be. Their answer: an honest one. Instead of trying to create something that we thought was middle-of-the-road, or commercial, or whatever, I think we first and foremost wanted to be 100 percent honest with ourselves, says singer and guitarist Scott Krueger. Elliot Root also features Melissa Mattey (keyboards, drum programming), Sean Truskowski (drums) and Todd Bond (guitars).

Remembered chiefly as proto-punkers who reached the top of the charts with the "caveman rock" of "Wild Thing" (1966), the Troggs were also adept at crafting power pop and ballads. Hearkening back to a somewhat simpler, more basic British Invasion approach as psychedelia began to explode in the late '60s, the group also reached the Top Five with their flower-power ballad "Love Is All Around" in 1968…

This is one of Eddie Harris's stronger Atlantic albums of the 1970s. Harris jamming on "Instant Death" is one of his most satisfying statements on the reed trumpet, guitarist Ronald Muldrow's "A Little Wes" is memorable and even the briefer pieces are worthwhile. In addition to Harris (who mostly plays his electrified tenor) and Muldrow, the group consists of keyboardist Richard Abrams, bassist Rufus Reid, drummer Billy James and percussionist Henry Gibson. This long out-of-print LP is long overdue to be reissued on CD.

Magnet To Steele is the debut effort from this Canadian native. Songs like "Love You 'Til It Hurts", "Move Over", "Murder In The First Degree" and "Magnet To Steele" really rock hard. Of course there are your typical slower paced numbers in "Love Don't Last Forever" and "Cry Myself To Sleep". Chrissy Steele's sound is very similar to another female Canadian vocalist, Darby Mills and the Headpins (with a touch of Lee Aaron for good measure), which only makes sense as this was originally slated to be a Headpins album. Magnet To Steele really was the brainchild of Headpins founder Brian MacLeod, who produced, played and wrote the vast majority of songs found here.
