A set of duets by trombonist Nils Wogram and pianist Simon Nabatov, The Move features seven compositions by one or the other musician. The playing is pretty free in spots but coherent and thoughtful, exploring sounds, specific ideas, and surprising melodies. One certainly does not expect the ragtime melody of "Itapo" to suddenly emerge seven minutes into the piece. Wogram's tonal distortions throughout the set are both impressive and humorous and he often utilizes multiphonics. Nabatov is right with Wogram, taking a long free improvisation at the beginning of "Herbie and Pierre," acting as a co-equal during the duets and pushing the trombonist. Although the packaging could have been better, the inner sleeve not only lacks liner notes but does not say which musician plays which instrument. The music is continually intriguing, shifting between conventional vamps and much freer interplay.

Chet released record after record from the late 50s through the early 90s. Most featured his group the Mighty Avengers and were released on bandleader Al Sears’ group of labels, usually Sylvia. You’d expect a man with more than 20 singles to his name to have at least been acknowledged in the industry papers. But no, virtually nothing. The number of records he issued suggests a certain popularity, so why didn’t anyone know anything about him?

Ralph Alessi is well established as one of the very best progressive jazz trumpet players and composers. While elusive as a melodic notesmith, it is the sheer intelligence of his music that is so thought-provoking and singularly unique. In tandem with saxophonist Peter Epstein, Alessi has concocted some truly original, spectacular music over the years, and this recording with his ensemble Modular Theatre stays on that not so straight or narrow path, weaving in complex modes and harmonies that demand the challenged listener to pay close attention. The difference from previous recordings is Alessi's use of a vocalist, but in this case not a singer.

Buried treasure, lost and found… pianist Horace Tapscott's The Dark Tree has only been sporadically available since its original, limited edition release in 1991, and the re-releases have been small runs. In the gloaming, fables have grown around the album. But as is by no means always the case with rarities, the reality here is as good as the legend: this motherlode of groove is a signature performance by a woefully neglected artist.

After jazz studies in Hilversum (Netherlands) and New York, she has performed in many countries such as Turkey, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, the United States, Lithuania, Malaysia and Switzerland. Inspired by jazz greats like Thelonious Monk, Les McCann or Herbie Hancock (and sometimes even called "the blond Monk"), Anke Helfrich makes good use of the groovy and powerful tradition of Afro-American jazz piano while developing her personal ideas and style. "When Anke Helfrich lays her hands on the keys", German Jazz Podium wrote, "the jazz fan knows what to expect: a tremendously swinging music with contemporary ingredients. Jazz that is pure fun."

The return of the band with the best name in contemporary funk is imminent with their new album and sixth studio LP, Free Your Soul, all set to drop and man are they fired up! Naturally, if the band in question is called Shaolin Temple Defenders and they’re fired up the first place anyone is going to point the finger is at the White Lotus Clan. In the event it turns out that Pai Mei’s lot aren’t even in the frame this time since what is really exercising Bordeaux’s finest deep funk outfit is ‘the one per cent’ – that tiny self-styled ‘elite’ operating without what Apocalypse Now‘s General Corman might refer to as, “any decent restraint…[and]…totally beyond the pale.”
