Out of the Blue was formed by Blue Note records as a way to showcase some of its top young talent. The lineup of players in the original version of the band (trumpeter Michael Mossman, altoist Kenny Garrett, tenor saxophonist Ralph Bowen, pianist Harry Pickens, bassist Robert Hurst, and drummer Ralph Peterson) has certainly lived up to its potential. O.T.B. was a strong training ground for the talented musicians. Similar in concept to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, the sextet performs seven group originals on their debut recording. Everyone but Mossman contributed a song, with Hurst and Garrett represented twice. The music swings hard and, despite being a touch derivative, works quite well.

The music is essentially hard bop, and it is particularly interesting to hear Garrett stretching out shortly before he joined Miles Davis' band. This release from the co-op hard bop group Out Of The Blue was most notable for adding pianist Renee Rosnes to the strong lineup (trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman, altoist Steve Wilson, tenor-saxophonist Ralph Bowen, bassist Kenny Davis and drummer Billy Drummond). Rosnes wrote the opening selection (the driving "North Of The Border") and at this point was not only a strong soloist inspired by McCoy Tyner but an excellent accompanist behind the horns. Trumpeter Michael Mossman is the most impressive soloist in the group, playing in the Freddie Hubbard/Lee Morgan tradition. Four of Mossman's originals make up the majority of the program; Bowen and Wilson also contributed a song apiece. This O.T.B. release finds the group moving a bit beyond their original role model (Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) to create a fresh "in the tradition" hard bop-based style of their own.

Riccardo Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra awaken the fantastical music of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky in a riveting performance.
The pieces are both inspired by literary legend; the icy and tragic melancholy of Tchaikovsky’s performance following the inner torment of Manfred is contrasted with Mendelssohn’s luminous performance, as light and mischievous as Shakespeare’s fairies to bring together the theme of fantastical identity, brought to life by Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and reflected in the magical surroundings of Lake Lucerne where it is performed.
In this concert, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra performs the Overture and excerpts from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony. Set to the delightful Shakespearean comedy, Mendelssohn brings to musical life the illustrious company of elves, lovers’ passions and the moonlight of night, whilst Tchaikovsky’s Symphony, likewise sharing the name of Lord Byron’s poem, chronicles the life of the tormented noble Manfred in four movements. Both works examine the protagonists’ ability to come to terms with their true identities.

Judi Jackson Live in London debut album released 5th October 2018 The rise of Judi Jackson continues with her debut album Live In London , performed and recorded in front of a live audience at Theatre Royal Stratford East, London. While Judi was performing at the theatre run of Cafe Society Swing back in June this year, this fantastic album of original tracks was recorded and played out to a 350 strong audience, along with some of the best musicians in the business.
