The 1968 edition of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band featured a larger ensemble with a horn section, allowing for a jazzier feeling while retaining its Chicago blues core. They also adopted the psychedelic flower power stance of the era, as evidenced by a few selections, the rather oblique title, and the stunning pastiche art work on the cover. Butterfield himself was really coming into his own playing harmonica and singing, while his band of keyboardist Mark Naftalin, guitarist Elvin Bishop, drummer Phil Wilson, electric bassist Bugsy Maugh, and the horns featuring young alto saxophonist David Sanborn was as cohesive a unit as you'd find in this time period…

While a certain blandness creeps into the instrumental selections, pieces by Nicholas a Kempis, Tarquinio Merula and John Coperario reveal a sharper, more personal profile. Most striking are the vocal-instrumental esoterica–the brightly serene "Je veux mon doux Sauveur" by an anonymous composer and the richly embellished "Avertisti faciem" by Constantijn Huygens, both works sweetly sung by the remarkable countertenor Drew Minter.

This soundtrack album to the acclaimed BBC television series Blue Planet – Seas of Life is by George Fenton. Isolated from their accompanying videos, soundtrack albums often just don't hold up. Even if you haven't seen this television program, however, that is not the case with the Blue Planet CD. Indeed, the music here works quite well as a "sit down and listen" album. It also seems that the neo-classical arrangements surely capture the mystery, majesty, beauty, playfulness, power, and even terror of the ocean world very well. You may be reaching for a towel after listening to this one.

David Campbell grew up in the suburbs of Adelaide, Australia. His grandmother Joan, who raised him, often played recordings of Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis during his formative years. His interest piqued, Campbell soon fell in love with entertainers like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, among other "old-school" greats. He first won major roles in the mid-'90s at the Stables Theatre in Sydney, and was soon nominated for an MO Award for Best Musical Theatre Performer. His debut solo record, Yesterday Is Now, was released in 1997, catching the attention of fans and critics far and wide.
