Through the latter half of the 20th century, an enduring cult figure in modern jazz was the Boston-based composer, academic, and pianist Ran Blake. In addition to his duties as the Chair of Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music, Blake has recorded sporadically, usually in solo or duo settings, creating a small but knotty category of near-abstract originals and quirky deconstructions of jazz standards. This is worth mentioning, because on first listen (if not second or third), the first solo album by bandleader/pianist Pandelis Karayorgis sounds startlingly like one of Ran Blake's solo records…

If you love the keyboard saturated, yet ballsy sound of Biloxi’s debut, as well as Tour De Force (World on fire), with the slick AOR charm of Simon Says and 1st Avenue, look no further than massively produced- harmony backing/lead vocal drenched indie hard rock/AOR debut from THE CAST. Essentially, one could say this was the Canadian version of Mark Free’s “Long way to love” album… almost too similiar in style/vocal/keyboard/guitar delivery. Ignore the cover art- I know, it looks boring… open up the case and you see a band that not only had the 80s hair metal look but the absolutely perfect late 80s AOR/hard rock/glam sound. From start to finish one of the best indie AOR/hard rock albums of 1993. “Do You Feel” and “Look Out” are simply incredible.

The 1968 edition of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band featured a larger ensemble with a horn section, allowing for a jazzier feeling while retaining its Chicago blues core. They also adopted the psychedelic flower power stance of the era, as evidenced by a few selections, the rather oblique title, and the stunning pastiche art work on the cover. Butterfield himself was really coming into his own playing harmonica and singing, while his band of keyboardist Mark Naftalin, guitarist Elvin Bishop, drummer Phil Wilson, electric bassist Bugsy Maugh, and the horns featuring young alto saxophonist David Sanborn was as cohesive a unit as you'd find in this time period…

Every piece on this Newberry release is temperate and balanced, just as the musical culture and domestic society were in the countries now known as the Netherlands and Belgium.
While a certain blandness creeps into the instrumental selections, pieces by Nicholas a Kempis, Tarquinio Merula and John Coperario reveal a sharper, more personal profile. Most striking are the vocal-instrumental esoterica–the brightly serene "Je veux mon doux Sauveur" by an anonymous composer and the richly embellished "Avertisti faciem" by Constantijn Huygens, both works sweetly sung by the remarkable countertenor Drew Minter.

West Coast-based pianist Alan Pasqua makes his debut in fine acoustic jazz fashion, backed by a big-name rhythm section: Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Michael Brecker contributes smoking tenor on "Rio Grande," "The Law of Diminishing Returns," and "L'Inverno." On "Acoma," "A Sleeping Child," "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen," and Cole Porter's "All Of You," Pasqua swings effortlessly in a subtle trio idiom.

Adopted at the age of two weeks old, singer/songwriter Mark Schultz grew up in Colby, KS. Although he enjoyed great success in high school sports such as track and football, Schultz' musical talents outshone his athletic strengths. He soon moved to Nashville; however, instead of fulfilling his aspirations of a career in music, Schultz ended up in youth ministry. His position as a youth leader at First Presbyterian Church served to inspire the young songwriter, causing him to write songs about people in the congregation. Weekly concerts featuring Schultz drew crowds. After continued concerts, including a benefit concert he organized at the Ryman Auditorium, Schultz signed with Myrrh Records and released his self-titled debut album in 2000.

This soundtrack album to the acclaimed BBC television series Blue Planet – Seas of Life is by George Fenton. Isolated from their accompanying videos, soundtrack albums often just don't hold up. Even if you haven't seen this television program, however, that is not the case with the Blue Planet CD. Indeed, the music here works quite well as a "sit down and listen" album. It also seems that the neo-classical arrangements surely capture the mystery, majesty, beauty, playfulness, power, and even terror of the ocean world very well. You may be reaching for a towel after listening to this one.

"Go Insane" is the second solo album by American singer/songwriter and Fleetwood Mac vocalist/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. The album was released in 1984 while Fleetwood Mac was on a hiatus between albums. It reached #45 on the US Billboard album chart. The album was dedicated to a former girlfriend, Carol Ann Harris, with whom he had just ended a relationship. On the vinyl version, there is a "locked groove" at the end of Side One on the song "Play in the Rain". This allows the closing section of the song to play until the needle reaches the label of the record. "D.W. Suite" was written for Dennis Wilson, who died the December before the album was released. Buckingham had always been a big Beach Boys fan. Dennis Wilson was engaged to Christine McVie from 1978 to 1980.

"My Christmas Collection" is a passion project for me and the album that I always dreamed of making. I sang the song "White Christmas" for my first ever live performance when I was 6 years old at St. Kevin Catholic School in Miami. I have always admired the timelessness of holiday music and wanted to honor the classics in this body of work. My wish for these recordings is that they will warm the souls of you and your loved ones, and I hope that you enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoyed singing them. I love the enchantment and wonder that surrounds the Christmas season!
