Though this is one of the more obscure Jobim albums, it did introduce what some believe is Jobim's masterpiece, the hypnotically revolving song "Aguas de Marco" (heard here in Portuguese and English versions). Mostly, however, the record lets listeners in on another side of Jobim, the Debussy/Villa-Lobos-inspired creator of moody instrumental tone poems for films and whatnot, with the instrumental colors filled in by Jobim's old cohort, Claus Ogerman. This was supposed to be a breakthrough for Jobim, bursting out of the bossa nova idiom into uncharted territory, yet a lot of this often undeniably beautiful music merely treads over ground that Villa-Lobos explored long before ("Train to Cordisburgo" especially). In any case, Jobim would explore his serious muse with greater success later on.

In some ways, this is a strategic retreat for Antonio Carlos Jobim after the classical departures of the '70s – a retrospective of past triumphs, including some of the most trod-upon standards ("Ipanema," "Desafinado," "One-Note Samba," etc.), with Claus Ogerman again at hand. But these are thoughtful retoolings, some subtle, some radical, ranging in backing from a lonely piano to elaborate yet sensitive Ogerman orchestral flights that cram more complexity than ever into the spaces (listen to his beguilingly involved take on "Double Rainbow") with only a few overbearing faux pas. Jobim's own vocals sound increasingly casual in temperament as he serves them up in an unpredictable mixture of Portuguese, English and scat.

Carol Kaye is an American musician, who is one of the most prolific and widely heard bass guitarists in rock and pop music, playing on an estimated 10,000 recordings in a career spanning over 50 years. Kaye began playing guitar in her early teens and subsequently performed regularly on the Los Angeles jazz and big band circuit. She started playing sessions in 1957, and through a connection at Gold Star Studios began working for producers Phil Spector and Brian Wilson. After a bassist failed to turn up to a session in 1963, she switched to that instrument, quickly making a name for herself as one of the most in-demand session players of the 1960s, playing on numerous hits. She moved into playing on film soundtracks in the late 1960s, particularly for Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin, and began to release a series of tuition books such as How To Play The Electric Bass.

    Label: RSO/PolyGram (W.-Germany) | Cat.# 813 642-2 (813 642-2 YH) | Released: 1983 (1981)

"Living Eyes" is the Bee Gees' 16th original album (14th internationally), released in 1981. The Bee Gees turned away from the disco sound that was prominent on their work in the middle-to-late 1970s with this album. However, the album was not a commercial success, perhaps due to their being so strongly associated with disco. It sold 750,000 copies worldwide, compared to 16 million copies of their previous studio album, "Spirits Having Flown", in 1979. While it did not sell well in either the UK or the US, the album itself was a Top 40 hit in the majority of territories in which it saw wide release. It would be the band's final album on RSO Records. The label would be absorbed into Polydor and subsequently discontinued.

This 52-disc comp, ABC of the Blues: The Ultimate Collection from the Delta to the Big Cities, may just indeed live up to its name. There are 98 artists represented , performing 1,040 tracks. The music begins at the beginning (though the set is not sequenced chronologically) with Charlie Patton, Son House, and Robert Johnson, and moves all the way through the vintage Chicago years of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, with stops along the way in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, New York, and all points in between. Certainly, some of these artists are considered more rhythm & blues than purely blues artists: the inclusion of music by Johnny Otis, Wynonie Harris, Bo Diddley, and others makes that clear…

Sophistication, style, particular care and harmonic research are the essential ingredients that create Loungerie. The trio of Fabio Cobelli (vocals, guitar, percussions), Alessandro De Magistris (vocals, keyboards, programming, percussions) and Deborah Farina (vocalist) transports the listener into revisiting anything but obvious to a vast repertoire ranging from jazz to bossa nova, the current revival sixties pop. The stylistic balance "easy listening" not without intricacies sound and sophisticated vocal arrangements characterizes the event Loungerie: a background sound deceptively simple and carefree that can give the public the excitement of listening music and the rousing dance.

This musical hookup between these two experienced roots artists who have more in common than it seems at first glance, is a natural evolution for both. Ben Harper seemed like an old soul, even when he began his career, dipping into classic R&B, gospel, and blues but spinning them through his dark, folk-funk persona. His work with the Blind Boys of Alabama showed him to be welcomed by veteran artists who clearly felt he was a kindred spirit. Harpist/guitarist Charlie Musselwhite's extensive résumé typically moved him past the often limiting structure of the Chicago blues where he first made his presence felt, to Tex-Mex, Cuban, Americana, swamp rock, country, and even jazz.

A project that combines a jazz with a modern flavor with rarefied and minimal atmospheres that alternate with pressing and decisive grooves. This is Time, the debut album of the guitarist Simone Basile published in November 2018 by the label Emme Record Label. The training is completed by a very experienced rhythm section with Francesco Angiuli on double bass and Marco Valeri on drums. Time is undoubtedly a modern work in which stand out the compositional talent of the leader, always at the service of the band, and a strong interplay between the members of the trio. There is also a strong sense of rhythm and groove that alternate with decidedly more melodic pieces where there is always a good harmony of the band.

This 2002 budget-price compilation from Germany features 16 cuts from the legendary Swedish pop group including "S.O.S.," "Waterloo," "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!," and "Lay All Your Love on Me." As far as ABBA comps go, Name of the Game pales in comparison to hit-stuffed overviews like Gold, Number Ones, and Definitive Collection, especially in light of the absence of key tracks like "Take a Chance," "Fernando," and "Dancing Queen," to say the least.

This 1969 BBC production is about as close as we can get to a definitive version of Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes, one of the greatest 20th Century operas. The story of the individualistic fisherman hounded by his neighbors who believe he murdered his young apprentice packs tremendous emotional power. The compelling narrative is richly enhanced by its subtexts: the lone outsider versus the conformist mob; the dreamer of improbable dreams that lead to tragedy; the artist (dreamer) versus the Philistines, and the homosexual overtones of Grimes' abuse of his child apprentices. Britten is conductor of his work and tenor Peter Pears is Grimes, 25 years after he created the title role at the opera's premiere. Britten was a great conductor as his recordings of his own and others' music attests, and here he outdoes himself with a performance that captures both the brooding darkness of the work and its visceral power.

Produced with the involvement of Nile Rodgers and approval from the estate of partner Bernard Edwards, this box set remasters and recirculates Chic's first three albums and the contemporaneous We Are Family, in essence a Chic LP fronted by labelmates Sister Sledge. Another disc compiles edits and mixes of Chic-headlined singles of the same era. During this period, the band surfaced and instantly reigned in clubs and on the Billboard dance chart, and with "Le Freak" and "Good Times," took their slick and funky disco-soul hybrid to the top of the Hot 100. The recordings created everlasting aftershocks throughout commercial and underground music, consequently making guitarist Rodgers, bassist Edwards, drummer Tony Thompson, and a team of vocalists led by Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin (with invaluable assistance from Luther Vandross) unwitting instigators of rap, dance-pop, and house music.
