Charles McPherson is an American jazz alto saxophonist born in Joplin, Missouri, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, who worked intermittently with Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1974, and as a performer leading his own groups.

Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba makes an excellent match for Joe Lovano's "don't pigeon-hole me" style. From mainstream to Third Stream to avant-garde, the saxophonist continues to do it his way successfully. Rubalcaba's eclectic piano technique includes classical elements, straight-ahead jazz phrases, percussive Latin-influenced grooves, and special statements, such as plucking the piano's strings. Together, they make a thrilling pair. As Lovano states in the liner notes, "The music just poured out of us as though we were one."

For over 40 years, Parisian composer and drummer Patrick Forgas has been working and creating a distinctive take on progressive jazz/rock, and he has been leading Forgas Band Phenomena for over 20 years. The ensemble’s many long time fans certainly know what to expect, as the group’s base of ‘Canterbury sound’ stylings in a orchestrally arranged setting with jazz solos continues here, stronger and with even more maturity than ever…

This is Carlos Garnett's third CD this decade after nearly 20 years away from the music business, and it's easily his most consistent and satisfying date. Raw, rough, and tart-sweet à la Jackie McLean, and searching like John Coltrane, Panamanian tenor saxophonist Garnett has his own sound that fills the air with saturated, spiritually oriented notes but never goes overboard with histrionics. What is most impressive is the togetherness of the band; trumpeter Russell Gunn (on seven of the nine tracks) meshes well with Garnett harmonically, while pianist Carlton Holmes has the McCoy Tyner spectrum covered.
