Very Best of Daniel O'Donnell collection features 20 tracks from the popular country-pop vocalist. O'Donnell's renditions of Irish, country and spiritual classics such as "Danny Boy," "Old Rugged Cross," and the "Wedding Song" are as schmaltzy as the day is long, but like a Sunday morning buffet, you can't help but eat yourself into a coma.

Vernon Oxford was a hard honky tonk singer with unlucky timing, coming up during an era when traditional country simply wasn't counting for much on the charts. However, he was able to find a different route to success, touring the U.K. extensively to capitalize on his surprising popularity there. Oxford was born in Rogers, AR, in 1941 and grew up mostly in Wichita, KS. He discovered country music through his father, an old-time-style fiddler, and learned to play both fiddle and guitar as a youth.

Slick (1977) marked Eddie Kendricks' final association with Motown Records' subsidiary Tamla. So, he went back to his old Motor City stomping grounds hooking up with former collaborator Leonard Caston and a few of the first-generation Funk Brothers including Eddie Willis (guitar), Robert White (guitar), Uriel Jones (drums), and Richard "Pistol" Allen (drums). While certainly not a full-fledged return to his glory days, Kendricks' sweet tenor hasn't lost a bit of its charm. Judging by the strength and command he exhibits throughout, his precious falsetto has not failed him either. Nowhere is that better displayed than the funky and danceable opener "Something Shady (Is Going On)" or the retro doo wop "Baby."

No Sleep at All is Motorhead's second "official" live album, but before you read further, be warned: the band was unhappy with the final cut and its release sparked a legal battle which marked their parting with their record company…

Although his solo outings had been uniformly well-received, Eddie Kendricks had not experienced the level of acclaim that he anticipated upon leaving the Temptations. All that would change with his third collection, simply titled Eddie Kendricks (1973). Thanks to the chart-topping success of the proto-disco "Keep on Truckin'," the vocalist was able to finally crossover into the pop market. Which is precisely the reaction the public had as the Eddie Kendricks album was his first (and last) to land in the Top 20 Pop Album survey at a respectable number 18. While there aren't many radical stylistic departures from his previous effort People… Hold On (1972), there is an overall trend away from his earlier songs that had been steeped in socially conscious soul music.

Pop, Pop Rock | Label: A&M Records

New wave starts to surface on Never Let You Go, thanks to the punchy percussion and jangle of the opening "I'll Never Let You Go," but Rita Coolidge embraces the new wave, covering Squeeze ("Tempted"), Ian Dury ("Stop Wasting Your Time"), Culture Club ("Do You Really Want to Hurt Me"), and Joe Jackson ("Fools in Love"). This is hardly a full-on skinny-tie record, though there are also covers of Al Green and Bob Seger, plus straight-ahead adult contemporary in the form of "Shadow in the Night" but this new wave predilection not only is fascinating, it's also fun. Certainly, the production all by David Anderle, half co-produced by Bernie Worrell dilutes the quirkiness and dulls the edge of new wave, but it's a happy balance of futurism and class and a wonderful little new wave anomaly that deserves to be heard.

On its face, Holly in the Hills was seemingly one of the more artistically dubious Buddy Holly albums to appear posthumously. Built around Holly's pre-Crickets recordings circa 1955, as part of the duo of Buddy & Bob, the familiar Holly voice is present and easy to appreciate, though he's sharing the spotlight with Bob Montgomery and doing a repertory that's steeped thoroughly in country music, complete with fiddle accompaniment ("Baby It's Love," "I Gambled My Heart").

It is amazing given the exposure Rita Coolidge obtained through the Mad Dogs & Englishmen soundtrack that her second album for A & M is such a cult item. Covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Graham Nash, and participation by names like Al Kooper, Glyn Johns, Bruce Botnick, and Marc Benno should have made this record her breakthrough. Instead, it took quite a few more discs before she would hit the Top 40 on her own with her eighth solo album, Anytime, Anywhere. Asylum Choir member Marc Benno's "Family Full of Soul" opens the album with wonderful bluesy pop resplendent in guitars, vibes, and Coolidge's distinctive voice.

These two folk stars present their first album of duets, singing old-time country music. Multi-instrumentalist Jody Stecher has made several influential albums of old-time music on his own, while guitarist Kate Brislin was a member of the Any Old Time and Blue Flame string bands. Their harmonies get right to the heart of the traditional songs in this collection.

Their second Handy Award winner includes slide guitar, Piedmont finger-picking, and wonderful harmonica. The duo of acoustic guitarist John Cephas and harpist Phil Wiggins enjoyed a partnership spanning several decades, during which time they emerged among contemporary music's most visible exponents of the Piedmont blues tradition. Both were born in Washington, D.C., although Wiggins was a quarter century younger than his partner; they met at a jam session in 1977, and both performed as regular members of Wilbert "Big Chief" Ellis' Barrelhouse Rockers for a time prior to Ellis' death.

Hearing this album for the first time, one is tempted, between the smiles and laughter it inevitably elicits, to label it as a cousin to Morris On for those who don't recall Barry Dransfield's 1972 wild and woolly ride with Richard Thompson et al., the latter was a highly informal and delightful stroll across the English folk landscape that broke the few remaining barriers between folk, rock, and folk-rock. But Acoustic Music to Suit Most Occasions goes further than Dransfield and company, and in a slightly different direction and intent the Deighton Family apply their mostly traditional instruments (OK, there is an electric guitar here, but it's amazing unobtrusive and, in fact, fits like a glove) to a brace of songs that supposedly put players like them on the sidelines in terms of popular music, and completely and convincingly make them over.

Rounder Records doesn't record folk or folk-pop exclusively, but the Cambridge, MA-based label is so strong in that area that it has often been called a folk label. That may be why Ready for Love did well in the folk market, even though it's essentially a country CD (that is, country with folk, rock and bluegrass elements). This was the third album that the husband-and-wife team of Barry & Holly Tashan recorded as a duo and their first for Rounder. Ready for Love was recorded in Nashville, but it's a long way from the slick country-pop coming out of Music City in 1993. On songs like "The Price of Pride," "Heart Full of Memories" and "The Diamond," the duo favors acoustic instruments and goes for earthiness and simplicity. None of the songs sound even the least bit overproduced. Although Ready for Love was much too earthy and rootsy for country radio in 1993, country fans would do well to check out this enjoyable, bare-bones recording.

This band undoubtably played an important role in the folk revival scene of the late 50s-early 60s. But, though I like most of the songs on here, the band's renditions failed to move me. This is partially because I would rather hear songs, such as the Carter Family's "Keep On The Sunny Side", by the original artists. I also admire folk musicians, such as Dave Von Ronk and Joan Baez, who provide a new take on traditional material. In contrast, the Ramblers seem to be trying to imitate the original artists as closely as possible. The result is a watered down version with nothing really creative happening. I do appreciate this band for helping to bring folk music to a wider audience. But I find their imitative style to be less than inspiring.

This recording is the sequel to The Attaignant Consort’s first album “Madame d’amours” and the third and last in a series of three recordings presenting the art of the Renaissance flute, both as solo instrument and as a consort instrument from the late fifteenth century until the middle of the seventeenth. This album places the accent on the musical transition of the seventeenth century, and shows how the consort of flutes adapted to the new styles of composition, which pushed it to the very limits of its possibilities. This recording illustrates the repertory for flute consort from its beginnings, including examples of the first instrumental fantasias, of “airs de cour” in four voices, a suite of English songs, bicinia, and finally French airs enriched with Baroque ornaments from the early eighteenth century.
