    Transcription has an important place in guitar repertoire. Starting in the 1930s, it was in part thanks to the transcriptions of major composers made and played by guitarist Andres Segovia that non-guitarist composers began to write for this instrument. So it is today that the repertoire has been enriched with works by the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Transcription for solo guitar has also evolved considerably since the first half of the 20th century: from a ‘melodic instrument allowing harmony,’ as Andres Segovia defined it, the guitar has become an instrument allowing polyphony. Thus, in addition to transcriptions made from works for violin, cello or lute, others have come from the piano or harpsichord. This programme illustrates in part this brief history of transcription for solo guitar, with works originally written for lute, or for harpsichord, brought together around the same instrument: the guitar.

    "Don't Stop Believin' is an album by Olivia Newton-John, released in 1976 and her first to be recorded in Nashville. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA and peaked at #33 on the US Pop chart and #7 on the US Country chart, and became her third chart-topping album in the Netherlands. The first single was the title track which peaked at #33 on the Hot 100 and #1 Adult Contemporary. "Every Face Tells a Story" ended Olivia's streak of seven consecutive #1 AC hits from 1974's "I Honestly Love You" through 1976's "Don't Stop Believin'". "Every Face…" also ended her streak of nine Top 40 hits in a row with its #55 peak. 1977's "Sam" was Olivia's highest-charting hit on the Hot 100 since the #13 peak of "Something Better to Do" in 1975, and was also her seventh Dutch chart-topping single. "Don't Stop Believin'", "Compasionate Man" and "Sam" were all released as singles to promote the album in Japan.

    Singer/songwriter Thea Gilmore was born to Irish parents in 1979. While coming of age in North Aston, Oxfordshire in England, she ignored the new wave reign of the '80s and instead began to seek out her parents' Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell albums. Later, she found comfort in the work of Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and the Replacements, naturally absorbing the intelligence behind each artist's work. Gilmore began writing poetry and short stories to amuse herself amidst her conventional surroundings, but she needed something more tangible. She left home at age 16 to work in a recording studio. Gilmore also founded her own Shameless Records and released her debut album, Burning Dorothy, in 1998.     In these undesirable economic times, it’s good that Charlie Hunter can get things done without a lot of fuss. He performed the music for his latest CD live in the studio sans aural enhancements, EQ or overdubs, recording straight to tape in an “almost mono” fashion, as he has described it, and mixing the music on the fly. He’s accompanied only by Scott Amendola on drums, rather than the quintet employed on Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid, his last group album. Both titles, of course, point to the difficulties creative musicians face in terms of keeping their enterprise going.
