For Time Shifter, percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo is featured with groups ranging in size from nine to 14 pieces. Hidalgo presides over dense ensembles that perform a variety of complex frameworks with apparent ease. "From This Moment On" (which has an effective vocal by Jill Amesbury that at first seems out of place) and "Yesterdays" are the only standards. Among the many soloists are Mario Rivera on tenor, trumpeter Lew Soloff, flutist David Rodriguez, pianist Eric Figueroa, and trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez (on "Call of the Jungle Bird"). A rather creative set full of unusual twists and turns.

Though the Electric Boys weren't as successful as they deserved to be, the distinctive hard rockers enjoyed some moderate MTV exposure with their grinding hits "Psychedelic Eyes" and "All Lips and Hips" – both of which are among the highlights of this inspired, Bob Rock-produced debut album. Despite what its title implies, Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride isn't funk/metal in a Red Hot Chili Peppers-like fashion – rather, the melodic yet aggressive band had more in common with Aerosmith's intense boogie. Combining an Aerosmith-influenced sense of fun with elements of '60s psychedelic rock (including a sitar), the Electric Boys made Carpet one of 1990's most memorable hard rock releases. Unfortunately, their moderate success has proved to be short-lived.

Baker has always loved African music and has lived there as well, so it’s natural that there should be a strong African feel to this music. Baker is joined by Abass Dodoo on percussion, and his Jazz Confusion quartet is completed by bassist Alec Dankworth and former James Brown and Van Morrison tenor saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis. It’s easy to forget just how Baker brought a different sound to rock drumming with Cream, because his playing has always been more naturally at home in the wider rhythmic context of jazz.
