Bob Berg's third release as a leader (released on a Japanese Denon CD) was his first fairly commercial date. Doubling on tenor and soprano but not sounding too distinctive on either, Berg performs eight funky group originals with a sextet also including keyboardist Don Grolnick, guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Will Lee, drummer Peter Erskine and Robby Kilgore on additional keyboards; altoist David Sanborn drops by to add some heat to "Kalimba." The R&B-ish music is very much of the period and sounds a bit dated now, but has its moments of interest due to the high musicianship of the players.

The strong tenor voice of Bob Berg speaks volumes more on CYCLES, than he was ever able to say in the context of the Miles Davis group….Strong blowing, strong compositions, strong band. A welcome alternative to the endless stream of fuzak that seems to be flooding the record bins these days.

Tenor virtuoso Bob Berg teams up with (a.o) Dennis Chambers and Mike Stern to create an album with a combination of heavy fusion and jazz ballads. The album was a 1991 Grammy Nominee and in this case, that really was for a good reason. Bob Berg shows the duality which modern jazz saxophone players strive to achieve: being able to play funkfusion as well as jazz. Bob Berg does both exceptionally well.

Given all that Kevin Coyne went on to achieve in his own right, his apprenticeship in Siren remains just that, a learning curve that brought out only occasional flashes of his later acerbity, while the band blues-boogied along behind him. But what flashes they are, from the effortless churn of "Relaxing With Bonnie Lou," with its invocation of Coyne's later "Eastbourne Ladies" shamelessly doing the can-can behind it, to the Stax-y soul of the title track, an R&B shouter in everything but the R&B…

Bluey’s overall life perspective throughout Life Between the Notes is well articulated, anchored by his first-rate musicianship, sensitive lead vocals and a firm supporting cast of Incognito alumni including Richard Bull and Matt Cooper. For a world-class musician who has been there and done that personally and professionally, Bluey nails all the essentials, making Life Between the Notes an even more intriguing listening pleasure.

This jazz-vocal group presents a decent yet mostly uninspiring collection of holiday classics, including "Joy to the World," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Silent Night," "Deck the Halls," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."

You might not have looked to Germany as the source of the next big opera star, but there you have it: tenor Jonas Kaufmann has reached the point where he can sing almost anything and coax beauty and even sensuousness out of it. Can big crossover albums be far off? He doesn't have quite the charisma of a Domingo, but the voice is at its breathtaking peak and seems to be well enough cared for that it could stay there a while.

The outstanding program spotlights cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Kathryn Stott plus classical guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad, all of whom played on both Soul of the Tango and Obrigado Brazil. They are joined by percussionist Joseph Gramley, who appeared on Ma's gold-certified Songs of Joy & Peace album.
