Signed to Warner Bros. in 1977, Farrell, who had been a valued sideman, had also released a few albums under his own name. On CTI, he released albums like Moon Germs, Song of the Wind, and Outback. But like many artists of his type, he was only as good as his producers and the album's premises. Ralph McDonald and William Eaton produced La Catedral Y El Toro. Despite the authoritative title, this is a fairly standard fusion set. The title track aims for Chick Corea-like expansion and excitement, but the production renders it listless, even Stanley Clarke's bass solo sounds enervated. "Promise Me Your Love" is trademark low-key and soothing McDonald and Eaton, with guitarist Eric Gale and Richard Tee's keyboards ably assisting Farrell's fluid soprano and tenor sax solos…

Not to be confused by the Cuba-born and American-based architect, Jorge Pardo is one of flamenco's most innovative instrumentalists. Known for his fluid and relaxed approach to the flute and tenor and soprano saxophones, Pardo has been one of the leaders of the "new flamenco" movement. A longtime member of the Paco de Lucia Sextet, Pardo has continued to explore the possibilities of his wind instruments as a soloist. While flamenco remains the foundation for his music, Pardo has developed a unique sound by incorporating elements of jazz and Carbbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

There are artists and musical - or, more generally, artistic - projects that transcend each person's personal tastes, because of their objective importance inside a given scene. Within the 'progressive rock made in Italy' panorama, from the '90s to our days, in light of the quality and impact of their productions, Moongarden, led by multi-instrumentalist and music producer Cristiano Roversi, rightfully fall among the fundamental bands. With an impressive back catalogue and after a four year break, Moongarden have created an album that makes its apparent simplicity one of it main strengths, and that succeeds in accompanying the listener on a musical journey that one would like to never end…

The recording, assigned by the label RTVE Musica for its collection ‘Jazz en Espaсa’, was done in March 2007 at the studios of Televisiуn Espaсola. Piano, contrabass, violin, percussion, clapping and cante accompany the two soloists.

Latin Jazz | Label: Mack Avenue Records

Revisiting the lean but powerful sound of his 1972 classic, Jazz Batá, pianist Chucho Valdés marshals all the technical strength and spirited invention he’s cultivated since. But Jazz Batá 2 is a look back in another sense: It arrives in the centennial year of his late father, Bebo Valdés, an Afro-Cuban piano master and the ultimate musical role model. “100 Años de Bebo,” one of two tracks to feature the marvelous Regina Carter on violin, is the explicit homage, though Bebo’s spirit hovers over the whole program. Yaroldy Abreu Robles (batá drums/vocals) and Dreiser Durruthy Bombalé (percussion) set organic beats in motion like a rushing river; bassist Yelsy Heredia holds it down while generating counterpoint and texture. Valdés’ piano flights are stunning, steeped in Afro-Cuban tradition but hyper-modern, almost avant-garde in places. His offhanded, brilliantly placed quote of “Take the ‘A’ Train” in the midst of “Chucho’s Mood” (at 1:33) is the stuff of deep improvisational wisdom.

Not quite as solid as Todd Terry's always excellent remixes and singles, Ready for a New Day still benefits from several collaborations, with divas Jocelyn Brown, Martha Wash, and Shannon, as well as male singers like Roland Clarke (from Urban Soul) and Bernard Fowler (the Peech Boys, Rolling Stones). The appearance of his previous single "Something Goin' On" is welcome, as are two tracks with moderate breakbeats. Though most of the album covers previous territory, that's hardly a problem for a producer of Terry's stature and longevity.

Whether as a soloist or leader of the ensembles Lynne Arriale’s artistry and influence are profound, have elevated her stature as composer, arranger and performer to a renown shared by few other jazz musicians. Jazz, especially as played by a small ensemble such as the Lynne Arriale Trio, breaks with the tradition to speak with one voice and grants the musicians an opportunity for individual creativity and spontaneous interaction. Therefore, it may be more accurate to characterize jazz performance as a musical conversation among the players shared with an audience. Jazz, the most democratic music, charges each musician with an obligation to accompany and support the others, but it also grants each one a number of occasions to lead the band with a solo.
