When one hears of an album titled Big Band Trane, it is assumed that the music will either be of songs by John Coltrane orchestrated for a full big band or pieces performed in his style. As it turns out, the Bob Mintzer Big Band only plays three tunes that have anything to do with the great tenor ("My Favorite Things," "A Love Supreme-Acknowledgment" and "Impressions") along with seven unrelated Mintzer originals. The leader himself does not solo on any of the 'Trane pieces and, despite some fiery soprano by Roger Rosenberg on "My Favorite Things," those three songs are disappointingly routine with the orchestra sounding like a professional college stage band.

A killer all-star session of funky fusion tracks – with a nice tight sound produced by Skip Drinkwater! Yesterday's Dreams differs a little from Alphonso's other strong mid 70s efforts in that it's not as spacey as a whole – but the rubbery, cleanly funky grooves are just as strong – and the record as a whole makes for more of a showcase for his excellent group of players! Bassist Johnson leads the session, but there's a huge amount of guests, such as Grover Washington, Patrice Rushen, Mike Clark, and Sheila Escovedo. Plus, Jon Lucien, Diane Reeves, Flora Purim, and Phillip Bailey all sing on the record! Titles include "One To One", "As Little As You", "Scapegoat", "Show Us The Way", "Tales Of Barcelona", and the future soul classic "Love's The Way I Feel 'Bout Cha".

Starting from the work of the painter Artemisia Gentileschi, this release aims to analyze some features of the painting and music of the early Italian Baroque, highlighting their creative specificities and their emotional substrate. Daughter of Orazio Gentileschi, Artemisia was only remembered, until a few decades ago, for the scandal of the rape trial - filed against Agostino Tassi, one of her father’s artistic partners, who raped her when she was seventeen – she had to wait over three hundred years to see her value as a painter fully recognized. The music is played by Accademia d’Arcadia, 13 musicians with period instruments and a singer. The 13 pieces performed correspond to 13 famous paintings of Artemisia.

Supercharged is similar in style to the group's previous album Madam Butterfly, and although not as highly regarded at its predecessor, critical reaction is generally positive. Lead single "Bad Times" reached the R&B top 10 and #47 on the pop chart, the group's first showing on that chart since "More Than a Woman" in 1977. Supercharged made #20 on the R&B chart and #75 on the pop chart.

After the big success of the album FLOW we have here new recordings that are completely different from the previous ones in one respect. Here, the duo of Axel Wolf and Hugo Siegmeth plays exclusively their own pieces. They do not resort to classical material from jazz or ‘standards’ of Early Music, but only to ones that are unfamiliar. For they are pieces that emerged spontaneously: nothing but duo improvisations, most of which were recorded on one and the same day in a Bavarian Radio studio in Munich. The lutenist Axel Wolf and the saxophonist Hugo Siegmeth who join forces here are two musicians with roots in completely different musical disciplines. A virtuoso on the lute and theorbo, Axel Wolf specializes in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, whereas Hugo Siegmeth, saxophonist and composer, is an expert on modern jazz and contemporary music. Although several centuries lie between the heydays of both musical styles, these two musicians both place special focus on improvisation: involvement in the surprising moment and spontaneous interaction.

Hindemith was not only a composer but also a hugely talented viola player who wrote a number of remarkable, innovative works for his instrument. The piano-accompanied sonatas are relatively wellknown, so too the Trauermusik composed in a single evening to mark the death of King George V. The solo viola works have had less attention: Hindemith referred to them as Gebrauchsmusik, by which he meant compositions with simple, linear structures, often intended for amateur players: music that responded to a particular need or use.

‘Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and yet cannot remain silent’, wrote Victor Hugo in 1864. Half a century later, his words had never felt more pertinent. Every composer writing during World War I found a unique way, through their music, to describe and protest against the horrors that were tearing civilization apart.

A major new, native recording of a sparkling operatic double-bill. After Amelia goes to the ball was staged in 1937 at the Metropolitan Opera with acclaim, Gian Carlo Menotti became hot property. Two further radio operas were comparative failures but it was with The Medium that Menotti really hit his stride. A tragedy in two acts for five singers, a dance-mime role and a chamber orchestra of 14 players, Menotti’s opera is both dramatically astute in the Puccini tradition and composed with an acute ear for mood and mystery: the score, often quite dissonant, conveys an eerie, morbid atmosphere. According to the composer, ‘The Medium is actually a play of ideas. It describes the tragedy of a woman caught between two worlds, a world of reality which she cannot wholly comprehend, and a supernatural world in which she cannot believe.’

Roger Sayer is at the forefront of British choral and organ music, recognised both as a prize-winning organist, and as an acclaimed Choral Director with some of the UK 's finest choirs. Sayer has even performed as the organ soloist in Hans Zimmer's Oscar-nominated score for the film Interstellar. Mozart called the organ the ""King of Instruments"", and this release certainly showcases its majestic qualities. Mendelssohn's Organ Sonata No.1 was inspired by Bach, and exudes an air of gravitas and profundity whilst enjoying the organ's variety of sonorities. Bach also influenced 20th-century composers Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Max Reger, both of whom followed in Bach's footsteps by moving to Leipzig. Karg-Elert's Symphonic Chorale is based on Jesu meine Freude by Johann Cruger, and on the notes BACH (B flat, A, C and B natural), while Reger's chorale-based Fantasia is a work of great virtuosity. The collection ends with a memorable sonata by Liszt-pupil Julius Reubke.
